Editorial Reviews Review

Stephen Mitchell offers what are perhaps the most masterful and intimate translations of Rainer Maria Rilke's poetry to date, infusing it with all the power, eloquence, rhythm and lightness of its original voice. Includes the Duino Elegies and The Sonnets to Orpheus.

...translations [that] bring the qualities that I most cherish in the originals into English with new intimacy and authority. Rilke's voice, with it's extraordinary combination of formality, power, speed, and lightness, can be heard in Mr. Mitchell's versions more clearly than in any others. His work is masterful. -- W.S. Merwin

From the Inside Flap

"This miracle of a book, perhaps the most beautiful group of poetic translations this century has ever produced," (Chicago Tribune) should stand as the definitive English language version.

About the Author

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926) is one of the greatest German-language poets of the twentieth century, famed for his lyrical intensity. Born in Prague in 1875, Rilke travelled extensively throughout Europe at the turn of the twentieth century and became deeply involved in the Modernist movement, working with the sculptor Auguste Rodin. His most famous poems are Sonnets to Orpheus and The Duino Elegies, and in prose he is most remembered for Letters to a Young Poet and The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. He died of leukemia in Switzerland on 29 December 1926. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
