Algorithmic art at its finest!,
This review is from: Selected Works (Paperback)
In the world of algorithmic art, there are typically two approaches: the mathematical -- in which the creator's primary inspiration is the manipulation of formulas to draw appealing graphics, and the artistic -- in which algorithmically-generated shapes and textures are layered much like the way a painter applies paint to a canvas. At the extremes, the former approach produces highly organized, yet often dispassionate forms, while the latter can obscure or minimize the inherent beauty of the mathematical structure. Kerry Mitchell's art displays a rare ability to combine the two in equal proportions -- a deep and thorough understanding of the math, which allows him to create the formulas that will render the artistic ideas in his head, and an innate aesthetic taste that imbues his work with drama and emotion.
"Selected Works" contains a wide variety of images that will delight both those who understand the underlying math and those who simply enjoy looking at great art. The collection includes exquisite new interpretations of classic fractal formulas, science and math play, space-filling curves, visual Sudoku, and algorithmic treatments of photographs. Mitchell's commentary throughout provides insight into both the mathematical and aesthetic inspiration for his work. Those who are familiar with his online galleries ([...]) will even discover compelling, new work in this collection.

A Drug-free Trip,
By Marty Wilson (Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Selected Works (Paperback)
Kerry Mitchell is a member of a select group of the most inspirational fractal artists today. His artwork flows seamlessly into a glimpse of infinity. I have enjoyed letting the images transport me into a realm of beauty and expanse.
If you take a magnifying glass and allow yourself to wander through the twists and turns and repetitions of each image, you are sure to emerge as a different person. Art informs us of a world beyond daily monotony. Kerry's work explodes open a world of infinite possibilities. I like to enjoy his work as a type of meditation. I enjoy great art, but there is something about well-executed fractals that speak to me in regards to hopefulness and infinite expanses of space. It is a pleasure to sit with each image and find the image that moves me the most. It is always a treat to reopen the book and experience yet another trip into a world that I would otherwise miss. Each of the 100 pages has a delightful twist of imagination and wonder. Sure, there are images that I like the best - but, I am just one person! I suggest that others discover this book for themselves. By using it as a quiet and peaceful facilitator for an altered experience - you will find yourself refreshed and inspired. By putting on some soothing or even rousing music, quieting images from the ever-present television and focusing on the meditative quality of the book, you are sure to be pleased. Returning to your day-to-day routine, you will be more apt to recognize the infinite patterns and possibilities in the world around you. I highly recommend this book for the fractal connoisseur and the lover of art who enjoys the pleasure of a physical response to a work of art. |
