Mac enthusiasts of all ages, rejoice!,
By Gary Gardner "Your resident dillettante" (Ellsworth, ME United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Selections From 25 Years: The Chain (Audio CD)
If you ask for people's reflections of Fleetwood Mac, most people nowadays will think of the highlight years of 1975-1977, with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer/songwriter Stevie Nicks. Older folks will remember the blues stylings of enigmatic guitarist Peter Green, who kept Britain's fascination with American Negro blues alive in the late Sixties to early Seventies. Both amalgamations of the band (and all in between and after) are represented too. There are also newer songs made specifically for this set, like the bouncy "Paper Doll" and keyboardist Christine McVie's plaintive "Heart of Stone", both real good tunes. Buckingham's esoteric but hypnotic "Make Me a Mask" is a nice addition too. All the hits (save "Hold Me) are here. The disjointed, unchronological track listing will annoy some, but still, there are too many reasons to enjoy this set. Those looking for Nicks' FM favorite, "Silver Spring", will be delighted at finally having this pearl on CD. One-time guitarist Bob Welch is represented by "Sentimental Lady", and "Hypnotized" has drummer Mick Fleetwood pounding out the rhythm in grand style. And, oh yes, Peter Green's second-to-none blues guitar dominates disc four. Listen to "Black Magic Woman", "Green Manalishi" and "Oh Well", and you'll understand why he was on as high a plane as Eric Clapton at the time. There are great live tracks and B-sides as well, making this a wonderful retrospective of an ever-changing band.

What happened to the four CD boxed set?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Selections From 25 Years: The Chain (Audio CD)
Back in '92 Fleetwood Mac released a 4 CD version of this boxed set in the states -- I have it, and it's one of the best boxed sets I own. One CD contains the cream of the crop of their '68 - '74 material, although personally I would have liked to have seen a fifth CD to accomodate more of that particular material. The rest of the boxed set is good, although the booklet that accompanies it has no liner notes of any kind. I'm assuming the 4 CD version is out of print. Try tracking that version down in used record stores rather than settling for this butchered version.

Some surprises - new songs - old favorites remixed,
By A Customer
This review is from: CD FLEETWOOD MAC THE CHAIN 25 YEARS (Audio CD)
For those of you who are latecomers to the Fleetwood Mac fold you will be surprised at the roots of the "Mac sound". There are songs by Peter Green and Bob Welch that you might remember if you where born before 1970. It contains many all their signature song, some of them in their alternate versions. There are also new songs, some of which I have seen live in their stage shows but were never released. The set is a must for any ardent fans.
