Book Description

January 15, 2001
This volume brings together, for the first time, Les Fleurs du Mal and the original etchings by Odilon Redon inspired by the text. These wonderful examples of the work of Odilon Redon, the greatest of the French Symbolists, depict the world of fantasy which he believed few dared to envision.

For Baudelaire, love was the essence of the forbidden and he saw the individual as a divided being, drawn equally towards good and evil, the ideal and the sensual. His originality sets him apart from the dominant literary schools of his time and his poetry is regarded as the last brilliant summation of Romanticism, the precursor of Symbolism, and the first expression of Modernity.

Immediately after the publication of Les Fleurs du Mal in 1857, Baudelaire was prosecuted and found guilty of obscenity and blasphemy. Today, Les Fleurs du Mal is considered by many to be the most important and influential poetry collection published in Europe in the 19th century.

The Whale and Star Press series on Artists and Writers is devoted to offering readers the best of world literature, art and poetry. Each book brings together an introduction to the work of an influential writer and an important artist in a beautiful and affordable paperback edition.

About the Author

Baudelaire's intention from an early age was to live by writing, but under pressure from his family enrolled as a law student in 1840. He never finished his studies and while living on his inheritance from his father he fell prey to cheats and moneylenders, thus laying the foundation for an accumulation of debt that would cripple him for the rest of his life. In September 1844 his family imposed upon him a legal arrangement that restricted his access to his inheritance and effectively made of him a legal minor and led him to still greater emotional and financial dependence on his mother and exacerbated his growing dislike of his stepfather. The remaining years of Baudelaire's life were darkened by hopelessness and financial difficulties. The agonizing moods of isolation and despair that Baudelaire had known in adolescence, and which he called his moods of "spleen," returned and became more frequent. He returned to Paris in 1864 from an extended stay in Brussels and stayed in a sanatorium. On August 31, 1867, suffering from aphasia and partial paralysis, he died quietly in his mother’s arms at the age of forty-six.

This book has provided me with a delightful first experience with Charles Baudelaire's poetry. This publisher has created a book that has managed to connect image and text quite compellingly. Although my grasp of French is not sophisticated, I enjoyed looking at the work in its original language as I read it in English. The poetry's juxtaposition of etchings by Odilon Redon creates an interesting tone that also enabled me to appreciate the beautiful severity of the writing. I believe this is a great book and I fully recommend it.
