Great Collection Of Selena Hits,
By Chazzyb (London GB) - See all my reviews

I know that Selena fans will complain that her Cumbia hits are left off this collection, and being a hardcore Selena fan myself I would like to have seen "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", "Amor Prohibido" "Si Una Vez" and "Como La Flor" as well as some live hits from The Last Concert of her peforming these hits, but there is only so many songs a studio can fit on to a single 80 minute Compact Disc. I personally would have included these tracks instead of "A Million To One", "Wherever You Are", "Captive Heart" or "God's Child".
However there are some very strong Selena hits presented here. I know they are ALL in English and none in spanish so the album does seem a little un-fair, but so many classic Selena songs are on here. Basically All of the songs she was planning to put on her English Debuet recorded with EMI records. You could think of this as the Finished "Dreaming Of You". Her Two massive U.S. Radio Hits "I Could Fall In Love" and "Dreaming Of You" are included in this collection. They are her two best songs. The Radio Hits are certainlly not the only enjoyable songs on here. "My Love" is a Great R'n'B Pop song and really shows the Fly Girl side Selena opittimized so well. This track even though short was extremely catchy, and could have been a single. "Missing My Baby" is another sparkling R'n'B tune that is kind of Lovey - Dovey and Cute. Good Song. "I'm Getting Used To You" is another smooth track the album has to offer. Not as good as the previous two, but certainlly not a bad song. The Flamenco Tinged "Always Mine" is a fun track that will no boubt get you up and dancing. It has some Spanish language pieces in it, and sounds great. Other song to get you up and dancing are the Club Like "Is It The Beat" which is one of the albums highlights. Two other good Selena ballads are showcased here. The rarely heard R'n'B ballad "Only Love" and early love song attempt "Where Did The Feeling Go" were previously unreleased on a Selena album, and make this compilation a real keeper. Selena's tribute to the "West Side Story" Soundtrack "A Boy Like That" which is a smooth Groove Ballad is also included here, so overall though this album Offers none of her Cumbia hits it has plenty of Tejano, and Mainstream Hits. I reccommend buying this over "Dreaming Of You" anyday, because this gives you a lot more for your money, and is definetly worth it. If You want some of Selena's Cumbia Rhythms I suggest purchasing "Selena - Live" or "Unforgettable - The Live Album" because Selena's Cumbia Songs are always heard best when she sings live, because the intensity and Rhythm is captured and these albums show Selena's true talent as a performer. This is one of Selena's best Compilations and has plenty to offer for any Selena fan. It is a Must Own.

Selena's greatest English hits TOGETHER,
By A Customer
This review is from: Selena - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This album is one to definitely own, All of Selena's English hits together on one Disk, with her Final English Songs, and Some of her first ever all on the same disk. You'll also get the Disco Medley from the Astrodome, which is a great bonus. Selena's music is a part of pop culture, and this album is one that only further's her part in Pop Culture.

OH .... MY ... GOD ... !!!,

I'm a huge Selena fan, just HUGE, and I just can't help but gape in horror into the absolute abyss that is this album. ...P>To begin with, this album completely distorts Selena's career. She was an awesome pop tejano performer whose *REAL* hits (like "Amor Prohibido", "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", or "Como La Flor") couldn't be more different from what's on this supposed "greatest hits" collection. Equally important is that *NOTHING* on this album (other than "Dreaming of You") could even remotely be called a "hit". Yes, "I Could Fall in Love" and "Missing My Baby" were also popular among the Selena cognoscienti, but *EVERYTHING* else on this album was an outtake or just something done as a lark. To me, listening to this album is painful. This album is a lampoon of Selena's career. It's an insult. It's nothing but a collection of badly produced songs that never made it onto vinyl during Selena's life, for a VERY good reason -- they STINK. If you want a true perspective on Selena's wonderful musical career, take a look at the "Ones" CD. It is a REAL "greatest hits" collection. Avoid this ... Your ears will thank you.

Finally, her real English language debut!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Selena - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
As awesome as 'Dreaming of You' and the 'Selena' movie soundtrack are (I've worn them both out), this is her true English album. All of these songs finally together on one CD showcase a talented artist who would have far outdone J-Lo and Britney if she'd been allowed to live and make more music in English. Play this along with the album 'Ones' (for the best of her Spanish language work), and you've got plenty of great music for hours. Rock on Selena!

I'm a huge Selena fan, since the Selena movie cameout! This is my second CD of Selena, and it's a good CD but not as good as her Dreaming Of You CD, the Dreaming Of You CD was my first Selena CD to own, and her Greatest Hits CD is my second CD of hers to own!! I didn't even know she had some of these songs before until I got this CD and I actually like some of them! :) Selena did a great job making all of these songs on here!!! My favorite part on this CD is her Disco Medley part, and my favorite songs are: I could fall in love, Dreaming of you,I'm getting used to you, and a million to one! :) I reccomend you buy this CD today!! TO SELENA: I miss you Selena, I wish you were still here with

Could have live versions,

Selenda was famous for her live concerts, an aspect that made me initially fall in love with her singing. She sounded better live that she did in studio, and you could always feel the electricity. I would have liked to have seen live versions on this disc, it would have made it so much better.

Great for English-Only Listeners,
This review is from: Selena - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I admit that it's hard to produce new material when the artist in question has passed on (and has BEEN passed on for several years). It is only natural that some scraping of the bottom of the barrel is going to occur and compilations, re-masterings, and "new" editions are going to become a necessary evil. However this one, for the frugal or English-only Selena fan, is a good investment.
Over my years as a Selena fan I have had to buy many compilations or older albums just to get my hands on the spare amount of English songs Selena recorded over the course of her career. As many of us know, there is a lot of cross-over between these albums and you would essentially be paying 15 dollars for one song and a dozen others you already have (previous to Itunes). This "Greatest Hits" compilation is a great way for English-Speaking Selena fans to get a hold of all of her English tracks (with the exception of a couple she either solely performed or recorded as a pre-teen). BUT, as any Selena fan would agree, to simply label it her "Greatest Hits" is extremely misleading. To have such an album with not a single Spanish-Language song is absurd to the point of laughable. The majority of the singer's career and success WERE in the Spanish market, and her only English success came after her untimely death. So my verdict is, for new fans and English-speakers it is a great look at Selena's burgeoning mainstream career. For a true collector/fan, it's not worth the money. |
