Several of my friends who are new to REBT have taken well to Dr Miller's lighthearted and entertaining introduction to this wonderful approach to personal development.

- - Although Tom Miller created this lecture primarily for work-place challenges, this was the very best self-help tape set that we purchased when our 24-year marriage reached the `EXTREMELY SERIOUS TROUBLE' stage and the marriage counselors were taking forever (plus hundreds of dollars) just to introduce the slightest idea of change. And although my hubby is usually quite offended by ultra-outgoing `clown-like' people, he was laughing and comically playing along with Tom's hilarious antics in no time, AND he even paused the tape to find a notebook for taking notes!!

- - The lecture correctly and efficiently identified the few most commonly held unrealistic thought patterns, fears and reactive behaviors that had generated so many of the problems in our lives. But the majority of the lecture focused was on `why' most people have adapted so many unrealistic perceptions and hurtful, counterproductive behaviors AND he then provides numerous, down to earth, realistic examples and `how to' exercises to truly help us implement immediate, necessary changes to correct our irrational and counterproductive thoughts and behaviors.

- - The concept that I like the best is that Tom acknowledges that we can never change anyone else but he challenges us to balance our freedom of expression with reason. He confirms that no person's feelings or emotions are wrong or incorrect, he simply asks us to recognize how often we're "over-paying" in emotional turmoil and generating conflicts just to feed our feelings and counterproductive emotional-based habits

- - The only recommendation that I would have is that if this set is available on video, I'd get the video version because Tom is so animated that we can't always visualize his antics.

I have watched the video presentation and listened to the audio tape as well. Dr. Tom Miller, a humurous and definitely unique in his presentation style, demonstrates how to take control of your emotions. He says that outside forces don't control your emotions. You do. When John Denver sings "Sunshine...on my shoulders, makes me happy" Dr Miller dismisses that as nonsense. He says the sun does only one thing; it shines. What makes you happy, is you. Interesting, enjoyable, educational and humurous.

People will either love or hate Tom Miller's delivery. While it is off-the-wall, I really enjoyed it and see why he does it the way he does. It is, as he admits right up front, carefully calculated. It is engaging and effective, and the content is exceptional. About two-thirds of the way through, he even talks about the type of people who have gotten up and left the live seminars by that point.

The whole point of his in-your-face approach is to put the listener emotionally off balance, then continuously show the listener how to deal with it and provide tools to deal with other high-emotion situations as well.

I think this should be mandatory for everyone going through high school, and pretty much everyone else, for that matter.

If like me, you rely on Amazon reviews to aid your buying decisions, please keep an open mind while reading this review.

This is the single most painful audio program I have ever listened to! I own several dozen audio programs so this is not just some random opinion. "Dr." Tom Miller is very challenging to listen to. He speaks in a very hoarse voice; he uses aint instead of isn't and don't instead of doesn't as well as got to instead of have to. In one of his more colorful analogies he suggests to his co-host that she needs to imagine keeping her clients on a diet by having them visualize that if they went off the diet he would break her child's fingers repeatedly and tell them why. This is supposed to paint a picture of the level of motivation required...it does but I prefer a less sadistic analogy. I listened to only the first side of tape one and could not get myself to listen further.

What exactly the five 5 star reviews found so wonderful I will never be quite certain but for me it was very painful and I would not recommend it.

Tom Miller presents a new way of approaching life nad emotions - and its a way that is not only easy to understand, but natural to apply. His off-the-wall approach keeps you interrested and wanted to learn more. I passed this along to several friends who have also immensely benefited from it. Its a great tool to help people better understand and accept themselves, which in turn helps one be happier with others. I've found a calm and peacefullness with myself that I never thought possible. This lecture was inspirational.

Recommended for people with an open mind willing to give oddity a shot - if you're looking for a "calm and relaxing" meditation tape, this isn't for you! If you're tired of misery and want a new road to happiness and self-acceptance - consider Tom Miller as a new coach!

This program is not the usual self help stuff, that pampers you into thinking "it's not your fault" and encourages you to accept and love your self etc. It more genuinely addresses the responsibility and the mindset required for change. Dr. Miller is often outrageous (in a funny way) and that can be disturbing for those who don't get his sense of humor. He announces at the beginning of the program that you must understand he is making fun even when he seems to be aggressive. Those who can't accept that, should perhaps look elsewhere at more soothing material. But if your aim is to really wake up the self motivation muscles, trigger a deep sense of commitment for change and find some excellent techniques for doing so, you'll love this program.

The thing that sets this program apart is that Tom Miller actually trains you rather than tells you. He does everything in his power to make you uncomfortable, then teach you how to be feel comfortable with what makes you ncomfortable. For me, that's a far better approach than a calm soothing voice telling me what a perfect human being ought to be. Instead Miller actually gets you to experience how imperfect your emotional reactions are, then goes to work on improving them.

BTW, I am not affiliated with the author, or a friend of his. Have never met him in my life, but after going through the program, I found him to be one of those rare undiscovered gems.
