4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but I am conflicted September 11, 2012
Format:Audio CD
NOFX is my favorite band. So, my review may come off a little biased. I like the band from S & M Airlines forward. Anything previous to that just never did much for me. Self-Entitled continues the streak of quality tunes - but perhaps with a little less success this time around. Mind you, the music is really good and the "pop" from Coaster has been scaled back considerably; perhaps to the detriment of the album for some. There are very few "stand-out" tracks and the silliness is virtually non-existent. It's a fast album for these guys - especially considering their age. It's still pretty polished - so if you are still waiting for the rawness of Ribbed or Punk in Drublic, you might want to just throw in the towel for good.

Now, when I say stand-out tracks, I mean the album kind of just blends together. While I appreciate the cohesiveness that lends to the overall record, it also gives the album a dangerously same-y feel. As I mentioned the silly stuff has either been trimmed, or the band is done with that. Again, I am conflicted by that because a particularly humorous track was welcome in the past. I still get a kick out of She's Nubs or Together on the Sand.

The speed has been turned up to 11 (minus I've Got One Jealous...), so fans of The Malachi Crunch or Dying Degree should be pleased with the tempo. Starting with PUTV, NOFX started to infuse some different sounds to their tunes. The band doesn't seem to be experimenting much with arrangements or sounds this time. This is mostly just playing their instruments pretty quickly in ways you have heard before. Not bad, but just a little more simple than their last decade of output. And really, the only track I could do without is "I've Got One Jealous Again, Again".

My gosh is this album somber. It is shockingly depressing. Imagine an entire album filled with My Orphan Year. It's another reason a fun song here or there would have been a nice break. Interestingly, I expected some heavy politics this time around, but there isn't much. Considering how cranky they seem this time around - and with an election coming up, I am shocked there isn't more political stuff.

Ultimately, this album is fairly no-nonsense. They aren't wasting any time. The album whips by with a runtime of just under 30 minutes. It's quick, dark and purposeful. It is not a highlight in their catalog, but it's a super strong entry. Even though the tracks have a tendency to sound similar at times, this is still some pretty tight music. It's tough to say if longtime NOFX fans will like this. Personally, if you have liked everything in the past two decades, then I would say yes. If you liked the speed and deeper lyrics of previous efforts, then you should like this - if you liked the silliness, then maybe not. In the end, this may be one of their most polarizing efforts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bastions of D.I.Y. September 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Early review of the new nofx album... I feckin love it. More rock, less bull. Very political and timely. Sick licks and melodies that remind me of early Bad Religion and a lil Minor Threat. Haunting sick and sad. Toe tappin rock n roll. I still love NOFX.

I've been listening to these guys since I was thirteen. Since they're older than dirt, that means I got in around White Trash Two Heebs and a Bean. No one is as uncompromising, consistently good, and as consistant in their vision as NOFX. Bastions of DIY indeed.

The new record is a study in fast rock n roll, so if you were expecting some brass from Hefe, or a silly song en espanol, it ain't here. What you do get is some hellacious music in a style often imitated, but no one even comes close. It's a sound perfected over decades that rarely disappoints. (I'll ignore My Vagina, as should we all).

As a side note... Hello Fat Mike, Hefe, and the Melvins! I figured you might read these reviews since you only work three months a year and all. I just wanted to say thank you in a non-nihilist, not very punk, cheesy kind of way. Seriously. Thanks for the years.

5.0 out of 5 stars ***Still keeping Punk Rock Elite!*** September 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a long time NOFX fan, I can say I was very pleased with the new album. Yes, it's faster, there are no Ska or Reggae songs, but the album is true and sincere and makes a refreshing return to the band's old sound. Less Ska/Regg, More Rock indeed! I can hear echoes of "Ribbed" "White Trash" "The War On Errorism" and "Coasters". The album may not be "Punk in Drublic" but sure does pay a wonderful tribute to the hardcore sound of that era. The beats are fasts, engaging and melodic. Lyrics are sincere, personal and sometimes shocking, sad, and not always pretty...The good, the bad and the ugly. The good old Punk Rock!

The album does NOT sound the same all the way through and is brilliantly punktuated by a few surprises, maybe not as often and noticeable as some of the songs on Coasters, but still surprising and different from what the band is used to. 72 HOOKERS would be the first one, it's a perfect way to start the album. If anyone is looking for a stand out track that would be it. This kind of long intro with those chords and riffs is building up a very nice musical tension that you know will explode in a fast, engaging punk rock groove for which NOFX is more than good at. Best example of these kinda riffs by the band would be the beginning of songs like "Idiots Are Taking Over" "We Threw Gasoline on the Fire and Now We have Stumps For Arms and No Eyebrows" or "We Aint Shit". Those intros are amazing and very melodic. The lyrics on 72 hookers may sound a little funny but Mike's point of view on Jihads and Afghanistan makes me wonder if this could actually work, Ha! It's the funniest song on the album and the music is just perfect! I BELIEVE IN GODDESS starts off with a very dirty bass line, Love it! Not a very fast song but definitely dirty. RONNIE AND MAGS is the first single, nothing too complicated, very simple,i like the vocal work on it, typical NOFX song, will grow on you after a few drinks.... SHE DIDN'T LOSE HER BABY is a sad song but its played very fast, reminds me of Lori Meyers, or "She's Gone" on the White Trash album. Nice solo by Hefe on this one! Pure NOFX stuff. You'll notice SECRET SOCIETY sounds a lot like a Bad Religion song, the chords and chorus are very similar to BR's formula, the song is a little slower but still very good. I,FATTY is another fast number, good melodic chords on a fast beat, Love the fast ending with the vocals in the end.

The number of fast songs on the album should please any fans of the old school era, most songs are raw and all are very well played. DOWN WITH THE SHIP is no exception, excellent song. Fast, with good vocals, cool guitar solo by Hefe, ah! These cool solos on a fast punk beats, who can do this better than him? You tell me... MY SYCOPHANT OTHERS is a little slower than most song but it still a very good punk rock number. You can hear Kent half-way in the song, taking Mike's side. Made me wonder if this is really how it goes for these guys when they need to make a decision; disagreeing, drugs, booze, arrogance, flattery, head inflating comments...Its true they've been playing together for a very long time, getting along must not always be easy, especially when your band has been successful for that long. It's one of those personal songs on the album that I like. I'm glad the band can be open like that and share this kinda stuff with us.

THIS MACHINE IS 4 is another fast/melodic song. I like this one because it has a funny/catchy chorus which turns into a cool finale at about 1:25 in the song, same chords on a different key I think (..I think..). Once again, the vocals in the end are pretty cool and it gives a different feel to the song, not quite the same as when it started kinda thing...(Excuse my use of technical and complicated words and descriptions...lol.....) I'VE GOT ONE JEALOUS AGAIN, AGAIN is another stand out on the album, probably the slowest song of the album, almost heavy rock but definitely one of the best, Mikes Vocal are more laid back, simple, but right on! , as the groove is slow and almost like heavy/lazy rock, its mike's singing that makes it sound punk rock. Simple but very effective, its one of my favourite on the album. XMAS HAS BEEN XRATED is our final song. Im kinda used to those fast and epic finale now, (Reeko, Herojuana, One million Coasters...) those songs are usually fast, very powerful and loaded with awesome back vocals and arrangements. This album is no exception. Although the song is short, it's very good. The sound and simplicity of the riffs and Mike's voice reminds me of the sound on "Ribbed". If that's not enough for you, just go back to 72 hookers, although it's the opening song,it has elements and arrangements of one of those typical NOFX epic finale.

Overall the album is awesome. May sound the same due to the numbers of fast song but its definitely a NOX album, 100%.. There IS few surprises, you just need to let it sink in a bit. Musically, The band is exactly where it should be. Best punk band in the world, no question about it. The Green Dragon Riders!,Ha! Keep on rocking guys! We love your music, we'll never get tired of it, never. Please take care of each other, I'm expecting a few more albums........See ya all in 3 years!..Oh and BTW, i know a few of the songs recorded for the Self Entitled session didnt make it on the record,.....so i'll be expecting an EP very soon!....Love you all!

ENJOY!!!!

Great album. Just as good as any other album from these guys. The song lyrics are a bit more serious than some others in the past but the songs rock just as hard.

In my opinion this is their least relevant album since Heavy Petting Zoo. There are some standout tracks, but it's not an album that I couldn't put down after a few spins. Read more
