The material is organized into four main sections:
Part I is entitled What Is Self-Esteem? This section, composed of eight lessons and 16 ready-to-use worksheets, deals with vocabulary, the ups and downs of self-esteem, evaluating self-esteem, and much more!
Included in each lesson is at least one learning objective, introductory activities, at least one student worksheet, several discussion questions about and extending from the worksheets, lesson review questions, journal-entry ideas for both student and teacher, and a personal goal for the day for the teacher.
After completing this section, the student should have a good understanding of what is commonly meant by "Self-Esteem" and have an appreciation of why this is important. Part II, Factors That Affect Self-Esteem, explains and discusses factors that can affect how an individual develops his or her self-esteem. The effect of important people such as family members, friends, and peer groups are discussed, as well as other factors including life experiences, individual talent and abilities, and values. There are nine lessons and 21 ready-to-use worksheets in this section.
The format of these lessons is similar to the first section, in that each lesson includes at least one objective, introductory activities, student worksheets, discussion questions, lesson review questions, journal-entry ideas, and a daily personal goal for the teacher.
Upon completing this section, the student will have been exposed to and have considered many different factors that contribute to shaping one's self-esteem.
Part III focuses on Combating a Low Self-Esteem. This is a collection of 22 lessons and 24 ready-to-use worksheets that deal with interventions for a specific emotion or feeling. These lessons can be completed in any order or selected as necessary.
The format for these lessons is a little different from the previous two sections. Each lesson begins with behavioral examples of the low self-esteem, possible reasons why an individual might feel this way about him- or herself, a case study, and ideas for the student, teacher, and parent to try to improve the situation. There are also three specific activities for each lesson: discussion of the case study, ways to personalize the lesson for individual student use, and a general worksheet for use by all students. Also included are journal-entry ideas for the student.
After completing the lessons in Part III, the student should be able to generate several ideas for combating each specific aspect of a low self-esteem.
Part IV is entitled Building a Healthy Self-Esteem. The 22 lessons and accompanying worksheets in this section focus on developing characteristics of successful, healthy people. Tips are given for evaluating one's own self-esteem for the purpose of becoming more insightful and practicing good mental and physical health.
About This Book The format for these lessons is similar to Part III, in that each opens with examples of positive self-esteem behavior; a desired outcome; a case study; ideas to try for the student, teacher, and parent; and three activities: examination of the case study; personal application activities, and a student worksheet. Discussion questions and journal-entry ideas are also included.
After working through the activities in Part IV; the student will easily recognize characteristics and comments of an individual with a healthy self-esteem and be able to identify specific ways to incorporate these healthy characteristics into his or her own lifestyle.
