As human beings, we have this astounding integration of physical, spiritual, and mental awareness which are our building elements, our foundation. All of the 6 billion individuals on this planet are, believe it or not, interdependent, and in some way connected, yet we are unique. Our uniqueness is our gift. It is the first gift that we are given and the most important gift we will ever receive. It is how we treat that gift that will determine how we live or if we experience life, and that applies to our children.
When we are aware of the wonderful gift of uniqueness, perhaps we will regard our children quite differently. Perhaps instead of "expecting" them to "conform," instead of "molding" or "conditioning" them, we will begin to respect and foster a sense of pride in their own individuality.
My Self, My Family, My Friends echoes the values and purpose of Embracing the Child. I highly recommend this book. -- Pat Kindermann
Whether you are looking for a concise explanation of a child development concept or reassurance that being a good parent is an achievable goal, My Self, My Family, My Friends, edited by Betty Farber, M.Ed., is a book you wont want to overlook. As a childrens librarian, I am frequently asked by a parent or caregiver to find just the right resource to answer the pressing concerns and questions involving the nurture and care of a child. My Self, My Family, My Friends will be among the first references I recommend. Rarely is a single book so comprehensive, practical, and understandable. The potential audience for this sensible guide includes new parents (both moms and dads), single parents, inquiring parents, struggling parents, grandparents i.e. just about everyone! From suggested activities such as fingerplays, recipes, and games to the separate annotated resource lists for adults and children at the end of each section, every reader should come away with valuable! information and ideas to intimately involve them in the process of raising healthy, confident children. -- Beverly Christianson, Childrens Librarian, Cutchogue-New Suffolk Free Library

Delightful Read for Parents and/or Educators!,

This review is from: My Self My Family My Friends: 26 Experts Explore Young Children's Self-Esteem (Paperback)
MY SELF, MY FAMILY, MY FRIENDS is a practical and comprehensive guide to young children's self-esteem. As a parent I like the concise chapters, each is complete in itself, yet complimented by the rest of the book. (Remember that most parents are limited by sitting times of 10 minutes or less to read, i.e. the amount of time they can hide in the bathroom!) As an educator, I am impressed by the topics, authors, and the list of resources at the end of each section. I found several unique topics of interest including "Encouraging Hope in Young Children", "The Joy in Your Preschooler's life", "Making Relaxation Part of Children's Lives" and "Snakes Never Slurp Their Soup." I can't wait to start Ms. Farber's other books!
