4.0 out of 5 stars The essence of practicality!
In the tradition of the One Minute Manager, this book is delivered as a short story of a younger man learning from an older man. The content is simple. And it is extremely practical. I wrote the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and I have to say I was a little jealous at what Epstein had done. It is clear, simple, and one hundred percent practical. Epstein says his...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected
This book did not help me the way I thought it would. The advice is over simplified. Life is a bit more complicated than that and frankly it insulted my intelligence. I like for a self-help book to have little more substance. I put it down after the first couple of chapters.

Epstein says his real-life model for the older man in the book is none other than B. F. Skinner, who Epstein knew personally.

The only reason I didn't give the book five stars is that the typesetting needs improvement. It isn't really an important element and it doesn't change the value of the content, but it distracted me a few times. Now that Epstein is the editor of Psychology Today, he'll probably get some professional typesetter to fix it up. But don't wait. This book is definitely worth reading as it is.

I first heard of this book after listening to Dr. Epstein on his program on eYada.com. Anyhow, I was pleasantly surprised by the simplicity of these principles that promise to change your life by making you a self manager. I tried one of the suggestions in the book and received immediate positive results. Dr. E, you know some stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you wanna change your life, this is a MUST READ!, June 16, 1998

This review is from: Self-Help Without the Hype (Paperback)
I first read Dr. Epstein's "Self Help Without The Hype" as a student of psychology in 1996. Since then, I have given gift copies to friends, family members and other students.

The three steps outlined in "Self Help Without The Hype" are simple to implement. Never before have I felt so much success in my attempts to gain control of my life.

You owe it to yourself to buy two copies- one for you and, one for a friend. Believe me, you'll be happy you that you did!

Remember, only you can change your life.
