5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, August 26, 2002

This review is from: Self-Love (Paperback)
I have long been inspired by the great Dr. Schuller. I find him much more refreshing than the fire-and-brimstone set. More than that, his words ring true for the modern world. An example of what I mean is, here's a man who built the Crystal Cathedral, against incredible odds, so when he tells you how to mobilize your resources for success, I suggest you listen! More than that, he doesn't try to force-feed you his religion or threaten you with eternal damnation. Such tactics of intimidation are a turn-off.

In all, a worthy addition to your Dr. Schuller collection. Other titles I'd recommend are: Be-Happy Attitudes; Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do; Life Isn't Fair, But God Is Good; and If It's Going To Be, It's Up To Me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Postive, October 31, 2003

This review is from: Self-Love (Paperback)
To get the negative part over with in the beginning let me say I think Dr. Schuller could have phrased certain points better in places in this book and he goes too far in saying this discovery of self-love is a second Reformation. Having established that qualification, I'd say he makes some valid observations in this book that are quite helpful for overcoming negative misconceptions that tend to hold one back.

In some places of the book I thought he was diverging from orthodoxy, but when I read his concluding chapter I think it was just a poor choice of building his case. It's in the conclusion that he makes it clear he is talking about God's plans and purposes being dominant in a person's life.

Dr. Schuller successfully uses scientific evidence to demonstrate how the ancient truths of the Bible apply to one's thought life.

I can't help but mention he wrote this book before the fall of Communism, but his prediction is clear, unambiguous, and now history. He wrote, "I boldly predict that Communism will ultimately fail..." He was right about that and he's right about a lot of other things in this book.

This small, unassuming classic is absolutely brilliant. It is a must read for
every Christian who wants to find out about themselves and how to become more
connected as a human and as a Christian. Brilliant!!!
