4.0 out of 5 stars A New Author That Shines Even Brighter Than His Book, February 7, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As a student of personal branding, I have read almost every book published on the subject. I only write reviews on the best of what I read and this is one of the best primers to be written on the subject.

First time author Jeff Beals covers all the basics and does so in a well organized manner. He manages to weave in just the right amount of motivational thinking while remaining primarily focused on the nuances of personal branding.

Rarely do I agonize over what to rate any of the dozens of books I review each year, here on Amazon. I seldom bother writing a review on a mediocre book and so my choice is usually narrowed down to a choice between four and five stars. This is one of those rare times I have vasilated as to the right rating. I so enjoyed the author's authenticity that I wanted to give this book a five star rating...but there is certain small town style to the voice that, regretfully, detracted from the power of the ideas for me. Alas, four star seems the right rating. This book is just a notch below what is widely viewed as the reigning champ in this area, "The Brand Called You" by Peter Montoya.

I am at peace with the four star rating, notwithstanding the superb effort made by this first time author, because I am confident that his next book will be even better and deserving of a five star on the scale I use. I eagerly await that book as I have become a fan of this author for his delightful authenticity, a refreshing style in a world where puffery has too often become the norm.

4.0 out of 5 stars Self Promotion is One of the Keys to Success in the Information Age, October 20, 2009
Self- promotion is critical to success in the twenty- first century and this concept of self- marketing forms the basis of this book, Self- Marketing Power- a business book with one main idea in mind: Making yourself and your unique talents known to as wide an audience as possible in the most efficient means possible. Self- marketing opportunities exist all around us and according to the author, we should take advantage of these opportunities whenever possible.

Self- marketing can take on many forms, such as handing out business cards, updating your resume to include your accomplishments and special skills, etc. This book lists some of the many ways in which people can market themselves along with the reasons why self- marketing is so helpful. In general terms, the book accurately points out that those who are well- known are more likely to receive the bulk of the promotions and opportunities. It makes sense, and I am sure we can all think of examples that fit this philosophy. If you make yourself known, through whatever means, there is a better chance you will get the promotion, initial job offer, etc. You could have all the skills in the world but if no one knows about your skills, there is little or no chance anyone will be contacting you when an opportunity is near.

Besides the general advice on finding ways to self- promote, this book also advises keeping pace with the changing world in which we live and making sure we do not succumb to the marketing means of the past. In the old days, self- promotion was not a widely talked about subject and there were limits to what one could do to self- market. Other than placing an advertisement in the newspaper, there wasn't much a person could do to promote themselves. But then, the world entered the information age and life hasn't been the same since. Now, we can market ourselves continuously and the author is convinced that the more you self- market, the better your chance for success. This means taking advantage of the internet and any marketing channel that comes our way.

I can certainly appreciate the author's sense of enthusiasm about self- promotion and its many benefits. Staying a step ahead of others is one of the keys to success and I like that the author offers his own experience as proof that self- promotion does work. I also like his means to achieve self- promotion and I actually practice many of the techniques taught in this book. I don't necessarily follow all of the advice in this book, and that is mainly because much of it requires too much personal time. In fact, this is one of the few criticisms I can make of this book. Self- Marketing Power is all about self- promotion and the book recommends seeking out new opportunities to promote yourself twenty- four hours per day. The problem is that much of this would be impossible to keep up with and/or would begin to interfere with family and personal relationships. Who among us has enough spare time to sit down and talk to various organizations to which we belong and use this as an opportunity to sell yourself? I agree that this advice is solid and everyone could benefit from it, but finding the time to implement all of the changes in this book would easily exhaust every free moment of an individual's day.

Self- promotion is one of the keys to success in today's information age. With the flow of information moving so quickly, it is more critical than ever before that individuals take advantage of the information age and use it to their fullest advantage. This book is effective at stressing the key points of self- marketing and it's a book that can benefit many business people and others who are looking for an edge in today's competitive environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars The key to success in today's job market, May 15, 2008
The author's preface describes this book as being about business, career and life success. It may at first sound like an overly ambitious description but it actually is just that. This is a well written and practical book with great suggestions for successfully integrating the challenges of business and career with a full and balanced life. Anyone who wants more from their career will find all of the critical elements outlined along with proven practical action steps to make it happen. The idea is simple, to have an outstanding life and career you will need to find your way to stand out.

Jeff Beals' writing style is engaging and easy to read. He offers eight critical rules of the game and how to follow them in order to win. It builds from there to provide concrete suggestions on what to do and how to do it. Beals is great at sharing entertaining stories and providing relevant examples to clearly reinforce important points. These all work together to help readers relate to their own similar experiences and learn what to do to improve themselves. Beals himself is a role model for successful self marketing and his personal experiences, the failures as well as successes, are the heart of the book.

While everyone is unique and at a different career stage there is always some need for self marketing. Self Marketing Power covers the full range from resumes and interviews to professional writing and speaking as a recognized expert. It is not a repeat of the same traditional approaches that can be found elsewhere but rather offers suggestions for current successful strategies with current technology and resources.

I think this book does such a great job of outlining and describing the steps to successful self marketing that I provide it to each of my executive career transition coaching clients.
