MCITP Self-Paced Training Kit (Exams 70-640, 70-642, 70-643, 70-647): Windows Server® 2008 Enterprise Administrator Core Requirements

Put this 3000-page training kit together with Stanek's 1500-page Windows Server 2008 Inside Out book and you have everything you need for the exams. One-stop shopping at its best. Stanek's book has the authoritative details, the nitty gritty, the tips and real world advice. This training kit puts you on the training path to Exams 70-640, 70-642, 70-643, and 70-647, maps out the objectives and gives you practice and review. Whenever I had a question or wanted more information one or the other came to the rescue. My only question is how come this kit is $229 for 3000 pages while a book like Inside Out is only $59 for 1500 pages. Surely Microsoft should bundle a print copy of Windows Server 2008 Inside Out at NO EXTRA COST with this expensive training kit to give a complete offering. Other than that, I think this is a good buy.

I have been studying for the MCITP Enterprise Admin. I have been in the IT field for a long time and have read dozens of books. These books are good for passing the exams. They aren't anywhere near as detailed as the Unleashed books from Sams Publishing (the Orange books that go into MASSIVE detail), but they are to the point to pass the exam. You won't learn how Windows Server 2008 actually works under the hood, but you will learn what you need to pass the exams. If that is your goal, this is a good series to get. It's also a great product to start your training of Server 2008. Don't let it be the last books you buy because you won't know everything you need to know to do the job. The picture in the listing isn't quite right. The product matches the description, not the picture. 70-646 is NOT included, 70-643 IS included so don't be thrown off by this as I was after I ordered it and already had the 70-646 book. The Amazon price is incredible and you won't find it better anywhere else - trust me, I've looked. So, if you are planning on getting this, stop your search here and just buy it from Amazon. This set also includes 4 x 15% off vouchers for the exams. That brings the exam prices down to $106.25 each from $125.00. That will save you $75.00 so really it's even cheaper than the price listed! I just took the 70-643 test and be warned. The new test has many questions pertaining to Sharepoint Foundation 2010 and the integration with office webapps and outlook. None of that is covered in this book. I also used the examcram book to review before the test and it wasn't covered in there either.

This self-paced kit isn't something you can sit down and read for long periods as it's not friendly or easy reading. With this and a few other books I did pass my MCITP exams so I am thankful.

Obsolete for current certification. Al1 individual 2nd edition books are all out now. Where is the 2nd edition of this kit?

These books are the best exam centric resources available. However Microsoft is beginning to put Server 2008 R2 material on the exams so they need to be supplemented with material that covers Server 2008 R2.

This collection of Microsoft training books are excellent. They can be useful as a reference source and for providing real world guidance as well. I especially like the real world labs that are in the book and also the books are excellent for preparing for taking the certifications. I would still also purchase another book if planning to take one of the certification to go alone with the training kit.

I've only read the first two books so far.

I'm a visual learner. Microsoft seems to be going the way of requiring more be done at a command prompt vs. with a GUI. While this is a good thing for automation purposes, it's going back to the days where people have to memorize commands. While this, in itself, is not a reflection on the authors of the books, I would appreciate more screen-shots and more conceptual drawings to drive-home the teachings.

The good: It's a great value. I could have spent more money on other books and practice exams that wouldn't have provided as much value. Plus, there's a coupon inside giving you 15% off of all the exams (worth ~$60)!

Make sure you look-up the Microsoft KB article listing all the errors in the books before reading them! There are several.

I like these books - especially for novice and intermediate learners of Windows AD/Servers . If you need to study hard and quick, you should buy this one.

I am currently earning my MCITP, and have found these books invaluable. The concepts and objectives are laid out nicely, there are plenty of images to reinforce them, and there are lots of practice questions and hands-on exercises to work through.

Just like the tests you'll be taking, the books cover working with user and computer accounts and groups, DNS configuration, GPOs, AD, remote access, and more. Since I tend to get lost in the acronyms, I enjoy the ability to turn back easily to a page to review (which I find more difficult in e-book-only offerings). I also like that I can work at my own pace, and work through the exercises to test myself. Apparently, there are 1200+ practice and review questions.

Everyone knows that reading one book (or in this case a set of books) isn't enough to pass any certification test. You have to do the labs, memorize concepts, and visit technical web sites. You have to read (or at least peruse) other books too, just to make sure you've learned all you need to know. This is a great start though and if you learn everything here you're well on your way to enterprise certification.
