This review is from: Self Portrait in Blues (Audio CD)
I bought this CD a while ago, but got a chance to really listen to it recently on a long car trip. Other people sing the blues; Paul conveys the EXPERIENCE of the blues in his singing. The meaning, and the feeling, of the songs come through. I thought his own composition "Where Did I Lose Your Love" was particularly good. His guitar playing is masterful, from virtuoso Leadbelly "boom-chucka" 12-string to knifeblade to "folky" fingerpicking to "country blues" fingerpicking. Paul is so good one wonders why he isn't better known, but I suppose that's the fate of all artists who place fidelity to the music above commercialism. I don't know why I rate this 4 instead of 5 stars; just ornery, I guess. I can't think of much of anything I didn't like. |
