Don't Mean A Thing (you know the rest),
By Jerlaw "JJ" (Sydney) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Self-Portrait in Swing (Audio CD)
This is the first album I bought by Josh, & in many ways the best. If you like your jazz guitar but haven't heard this man play, I urge you to get it. As in all his albums, Josh refuses to be categorized. Bebop? Yes. Swing? Sure. His legato technique & refusal to play those "flashy" riffs are (in my humble opinion) at least partly what separates Josh from the rest. I have quite a few of the albums he made after this one, & he never disappoints. His rhythm section is always top-notch, & he is a very unselfish musician in that he gives them a chance to stretch out. I don't have the album with me at the moment, or I'd have a few more things to say about some particular tunes he performs on this one. Good luck on the you-know-where gig, Josh. Wish I could be there.
Joshua Breakstone is not a household name in the jazz world yet, but he's getting there. |
