This review is from: Self Psychology and Diagnostic Assessment: Identifying Selfobject Functions Through Psychological Testing (Personality and Clinical Psychology Series) (Hardcover)
Noted psychologist and researcher, Dr. Marshall Silverstein has written an extraordinary book on psychological assessment. Through the lens of Kohut's self psychology, Dr. Silverstein blends the complex theory of self psychology with content analysis on the Rorschach and other projective psychological tests. His overview of Kohut's theory itself stands alone as perhaps the clearest summary of these concepts in the literature. His application of these concepts to psychological assessment opens new vistas of compassionate interpretation the underlying dynamics of what has often been called 'narcissistic wounding' though what Silverstein more correctly refers to as damage in selfobject functioning. His book includes two chapters where he presents in detail two cases complete with the original psychological assessment responses, which allows the reader a rare look into the mind of a very astute and compassionate clinician. I recommend this book highly.
