As someone who enjoyed reading the author's novel, Mercury Falls, I expected his guide to self-publishing to be lucid and entertaining and I was not disappointed. Using the example of his very successful foray into self-publishing as an example, he describes not just the process of publishing an e-book on a specific, nuts-and-bolts level, but also provides a great guide to marketing your efforts through blogs and the online community. I would highly recommend this book to anyone entertaining thoughts of following in Kroese's footsteps in becoming not just a self-published author, but an extremely successful one.

I grabbed a copy of Robert Kroese's book on the recommendation of fellow (successful) Amazon Kindle and Encore author, Elisa Lorello. She says on her blog, "I would've loved to have read this when I was starting out, and even now I learned some useful tips." I thought, Huh, that's interesting she'd recommend this book over many others on self-publishing.

Kroese wrote Mercury Falls an Amazon Encore ebook that's sold over 10,000 copies so far. He covers alot of ground based on real-life experience and it's *not* "This is a good time to think about self publishing" drivel. Instead you get a nitty-gritty perspective on marketing, pricing, promotion, blog marketing, developing a platform of solid fans, printing options (pros/cons) and a ton more.

I followed Robert Kroese on his Twitter account as he was doing the groundwork for "Mercury Falls." I read that book when it came out, and continued watching as he did what few self-publishers manage -- namely, succeed financially with the book.

Then came "Self-Publish Your Novel." I was on the brink of self-publishing my own novel, and only got this book after a week of watching absolutely nothing happen with my own work.

This is more of an extended case study than an instructional guide. From my perspective, it gave the background and rationale for what he did. It also gave a great deal of insight on possible shortcomings in my own marketing effort. This is also an excellent perspective on the current situation in publishing generally.

More About the Author

Robert Kroese's sense of irony was honed growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan - home of the Amway Corporation and the Gerald R. Ford Museum, and the first city in the United States to fluoridate its water supply. In second grade, he wrote his first novel, the saga of Captain Bill and his spaceship Thee Eagle. This turned out to be the high point of his academic career. After barely graduating from Calvin College in 1992 with a philosophy degree, he was fired from a variety of jobs before moving to California, where he stumbled into software development. As this job required neither punctuality nor a sense of direction, he excelled at it. In 2009, he called upon his extensive knowledge of useless information and love of explosions to write his first novel, Mercury Falls. Since then, he has written two sequels, Mercury Rises (2011) and Mercury Rests (due out October 18, 2012).

The reviews came in at a painfully slow rate; if I were doing it over I would probably have tried to get the book in the hands of reviewers at least a month in advance of the official release date. "e;
