More About the Author

David Stoop, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist in California. He received a master's in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary and a doctorate from the University of Southern California. He is the founder and director of the Center for Family Therapy, in Newport Beach, California. David is also an adjunct professor at Fuller Seminary and serves on the executive board of the American Association of Christian Counselors. David is a Gold Medallion-winning author and has written more than twenty-five books.

As a cognitive Christian therapist, I have discovered the "self-talk" approach to be very effective. It is not only backed by research, but it is biblically based. Dr. Stoop does a good job in boiling down a lot of cognitive therapy concepts and biblical psychology into a very practical and easy-to-follow book for counselors and counselees alike. I wish I wrote it.

This book has absolutely turned my whole life around. It has given me a complete new outlook on my recovery from drugs and alcohol. It has brought to light that drugs and alcohol were not my main problem, but the way I thought about myself. After reading this book, and applying it to my life, I am a new person. I now see myself in a totally different light. There is power in words--especially the words we speak to ourselves. We become what we say we are.

I found this book to be an excellent resource in my profession as a Christian Counselor. It integrates cognitive theory with Christian principles, in a clear and easy to understand manner. I have also recommended this book to my clients, who have also found it to be helpful.
