This review is from: Self-discipline in 10 days: How to go from thinking to doing (Paperback)
I have lots of ideas and projects, but most of them were not getting done. I read the book, one chapter per day and did the exercises like a good little student. It has been extremely helpful. I've built the shelves I wanted to build, cleaned up the terrible messes around the house, started projects and making so much progress on them that I actually amaze myself. I've read other books from the so called "success" literature to help, but this one is the most practical, and easy to read. I almost don't feel like writing a review because I'd be giving away such a useful tool.

The book is essentially split in two big sections. The first section deals with fears that people have. According to the author these fears subconsciously interfere with your ability to get things done. Through the exercises you gain insight into what fears you have and to what extent they influence you. I found the exercises useful, but a friend didn't agree that these were the most important fears.

The second section has four or five chapters. Each chapter deals with a particular attitude that is an obstacle (such as perfectionism), and provides a tool to help the self discipline process. Some tools are a bit wishy-washy, like "visualization", and "Mr Hyde" but after an initial "what is this BS?" I tried the concepts and I find them very useful.

All in all, a very useful and practical book. I recommend that you read one chapter per day, and when you start a new chapter quickly skim over the preceeding one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, February 14, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Self-discipline in 10 days: How to go from thinking to doing (Paperback)
This is a book that aims to help you improve your self-discipline by carefully guiding you along a series of mental blocks that stop you from being disciplined.

The author very cleverly uses the typography in order to draw your attention to key points. Although the text seems unassuming at first, an awful lot of trial-and-error must have flown into this book as it almost at every stage seems to know what you're thinking and, based on that, guides you in the right direction.

Personally, I am awed by the spot-on analysis of the way that I'm thinking and how that blocked me from doing the things that I want to do. Although striving for "self-discipline" sounds strict and funless, I actually feel liberated after reading this book and even starting to apply the lessons learned. For me the book worked wonders and I am now getting things done that used to lie around for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, crisp and clear, September 19, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Self-discipline in 10 days: How to go from thinking to doing (Paperback)
Excellent and short book (150 pages) that addresses the main issues of why people lack self-discipline and how to gain the skills necessary for self-discipline.

The books format is downscale, but do not let that distract from this book's effectiveness. For instance, the cover is bright orange, containing cheap clipart. It is written in large readible font as if for senior citizens. The whole book feels like a set of handouts in a classroom written in the 1970s on an early word processor.

However, this book works. It provides good information. It identifies the main forms of self-defeating behavior that prevent self-discipline. It has 15-minute writing exercises that let you identify ways in which that self-defeating behavior hinders you. It then provides key skills necessary to overcome that self-defeating behavior.

Worked for me. Crisp, clear, and focused. No fluff. No useless examples, no self-promotion. Just the facts. Useful ones. Great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good start to changing yourself, October 14, 2004
This review is from: Self-discipline in 10 days: How to go from thinking to doing (Paperback)
At first I thought the title was a bit too good to be true, how can anyone change in 10 days? I bought it anyway since being human that we are, easy and effortless is the most attractive option. Well, I read it and applied (actually do the exercises) and it did improve my thinking, then little by little, my actions. I took my time with it but eventually I did learn about enabling new habits, not just discipline, through the steps and methods given in the book (visualization, self-talk, etc). Now, I catch myself talking out of doing things that I should do, I immediately snap out of it and do it. Good book, I'm starting to use it in other areas of my life that needs a bit of work.

This review is from: Self-discipline in 10 days: How to go from thinking to doing (Paperback)
I recently read a friend's copy of this book and also just ordered my own, I liked it so much. Those of you who have read some of my other reviews on Amazon will see that I'm a big proponent of self-discipline being the key to success in any area of your life. This book shows you how to actually acquire the discipline that you need, and gives you a concrete plan to do so. If you feel that your success in any area of your life is lacking, give this excellent book a shot...you will not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!, June 23, 2000

This review is from: Self-discipline in 10 days: How to go from thinking to doing (Paperback)
This book rules! I predict that word-of-mouth will make it a top seller for years to come. I really liked the clear explanations and specific directions. The author teaches a super easy self-discipline system. First, he simplifies the psychological process of self-discipline. Then he shows you how to immediately increase your self-discipline power and apply it to anything you want. I highly recommend this book to people who want to turn up their self-discipline a few notches. And here is a message for all you thinkers, dreamers, or even couch potatoes who are ready to transform your ideas into action: Buy this book! You can thank me later.

I am now reading the book for the second time. The author does a very good job at getting you to do the exercises. You are very inspired by this book and truely believe that you can become a better worker.

I bought this book to help me stop procrastinating and wasting valuable time worrying about things and just putting other things before my work.

I still have a little trouble applying the last two sections in the book but I am gonna keep reading and going over the information until I got it stuck as a habit.

Self-Discipline is something you can learn. It just takes some work.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has literally changed my life, March 6, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Self-discipline in 10 days: How to go from thinking to doing (Paperback)
A lot of people don't have goals. Or if they do, they don't write them down.

I've always had goals and even had written them down in the past.

But I couldn't get myself to actually take the consistent action on them because of my various fears.

This book has COMPLETELY changed that.

Some of the techniques in this book I laughed at and thought "I'll skip that one", like "Vitaminds", Visualization and Rewards. It turns out that "Vitaminds" and Visualization have been what has helped me the MOST.

I've literally turned my life around because of this book. I'm starting a new business, going back to school, going to toastmasters, getting into shape, etc. etc.

All because of this book.

The only complaint I have is about the "10 Days" title. I'm a slow learner and it took me much longer than 10 days to really implement all the techniques, but even if it takes 10 months, isn't it worth it?

This review is from: Self-discipline in 10 days: How to go from thinking to doing (Paperback)
Self-Discipline in 10 Days is brief and to the point -- no endless case histories about how people used the techniques to brighten their lives. You actually can get some results in 10 days but, for significant results, it takes longer, 10 weeks, 10 months. This is a book to read -- and then review many times over. There's too much to learn all at once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bryant is "Spot-On" !, November 23, 2004
This review is from: Self-discipline in 10 days: How to go from thinking to doing (Paperback)
Theodore Bryant has written an excellent book which WILL work for you if you follow his exact instructions. He knows his stuff.

Be careful to work through the chapters and exercises in the times suggested. This is most important if you wish to make a real change. Read and think as you go. Saviour and reflect on his words. Practice his suggestions (tools) at every opportunity.

For years I have researched and developed my own courses and presentations. This is one of only a few books that I have found to be "spot-on" for mental change. Treasure it!

Theodore has made no reference to the cognitive neurosciences (by way of explaining the reasons for his methods) but I am sure this was a decision he made to keep his program simple, effective and to the the point.

This book should change the way you think and do. Welcome it with open arms!
