I'm in full agreement with Zak's review, this is an essential addition to any fan's collection. One thing that's inaccurate, however, is the personnel. So this is what you get: Favorite Things & I Want To Talk : recorded Newport Jazz 1963, with Tyner, Garrison, and Roy Haynes on drums. Selflessness : Oct 1965 LA, Tyner, Garrison, Elvin Jones, Sanders, Donald Garrett (bcl), Frank Butler (dr), Juno Lewis (perc)

Simply THE BEST!,

This entire effort is Trane at his best.Just when you've thought you've heard My Favorite Things in every concievable way, look out. This is THE QUARTET at it's finest 18 minutes. On Eckstine's, I Want to Talk About You,you'll quickly notice that Trane is a balladeer atheart. His solo is probably my most memorable passages in my life.Selflessness is a continous burst of high voltage, energy charges. The combination of Trane and at the time little known Pharoah Sanders,is a colorful and forceful combination that blend into blaze of fury.Add percusionist,Rashied Ali,and ump!I've often imagined these cats in a music class together and as the instructor leaves the rooms, these cats just cuttin' up.As the teacher walks back in,he's in hysteria, "Mr.Coletrane, Mr.Sanders,McCoy,what the.... I originally bought this back in 1970 while serving in SE Asia, and I've searched high and low for it.Try it,and you'll see why I say, "It's simply "THE BEST!"

This is the only version that has the full length solo by Tyner. if you haqve any other release of Trane and McCoy doing "Favorite", you d onot have it all. Recording quality is weak but the performances are very fine. Roy Haynes subbing for Elvin Jones plays his beautiful polyrhythmic style and Jimmy Garrison keeps it all moving forward. And I never get tired of Billy Eckstein's "I Want to Talk About You'- Trane was a fine ballad player, as we know from his Johnny Hartman disc and many others. Recording quality)( tinny and sibilant, brittle sounding, almost no recording of Garrison ) keeps it from being 5 star.
