"White Ladder" fans take note,
By
This review is from: Sell Sell Sell (Audio CD)
Ironically, now that he's a proven seller, fans can finally get ahold of "Sell Sell Sell" again. The title track is one of David's most powerful, scathing songs, featuring a haunting sound creted by strumming his electric guitar above the neck. Despite excellent songwriting and his always powerful voice (and even free promotional cassettes handed out at his shows during the tour to support this album) "Sell Sell Sell" marked the end of the first part of David Gray's career. While not as inorganic as "White Ladder," David does favor a heavier sound on this record, utilizing a full band on many tracks and electric guitars. His quiet, powerful songs do rear up, occasionally, and I think "Smile" is one of his best in this vein. It's a really beautiful, fragile love song. He's been playing "Late Night Radio" (a would-be hit that got a lot of rotation on Radio K in Minnesota) and "Everytime" in shows lately, but my favorites would have to be "Smile," "What Am I Doing Wrong?" and "Forever Is Tomorrow Is Today." I still like his first two records the best, but this is a great record nonetheless, and I'd recommend it to new and old fans alike.

A Pinacle of Sorts,

This was the first David Gray album I owned, and I've come to regard it as perhaps his best. The standard rock and folk styles David Gray had been working with on the previous two albums are present here as well; in my opinion this is where they gel most sucessfully. If you've only heard White Ladder, be warned that Sell Selll Sell has none of its techno-tinged stylings. The first two songs are straight-ahead electric rockers, as are several others scattered further in the album. Overall it's a more musically upbeat album than the somewhat reserved White Ladder; it's also more musically cohesive than its two predecessors (though that's splitting hairs -- all four albums are terrific.) If you want to get just one of Mr. Gray's earlier albums, I'd recommend this one to start with.

Many colors of Gray.......,

The third release from the UK singer-songwriter is a great collection of soaring dylanesque songs. Whilst maybe lacking the cohesiveness of his first release "A Century Ends" and the sheer beauty of his current release "White Ladder" this is a welcome addition to the collection of anyone who enjoys great songs. Standout tracks include Late Night Radio, Gutters full of Rain and Folk Song. He was dropped from his record company shortly after this release, and subsequently released White Ladder on his own label which is now something like 9-times platinum in Ireland. Buy the other albums if you havn't heard him, but this one will surely follow quickly.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY TO DESCRIBE THIS MAN!,

Hello to all,I bought white ladder, not for Babylon but for the song Nightblindness because of it's acoustic guitar work, of course, I was HOOKED and am a FAN in all senses of the word. But, I picked up Sell Sell Sell and, well, I was shocked (I had obtained Lost Songs And the EPs 92-94 previous to this one). "Faster, Sooner, Now" was shocking to hear at first but I listened to the album and it grew on me like bamboo in a tropical rainstorm; this is something that all of David's albums have done. The only thing I haven't seen is, well, David (partly because I'm totally blind but that doesn't matter at all, I'm paying the money when he comes out here, it's about the only concert I will pay that price for). Anyway, sorry, I digress quite frequently. The song that HOOKED me was "hold on to nothing," it's one of my favorites next to some of the stuff on his earlier albums. Also, "forever is tomorrow is today" is an excellent song with a good message especially now. This one is as good as the rest (all of which I will be reviewing sooner or later and I will do my best to help those deprived souls who have not picked up all his albums). I'll just sum it up this way. Like everything David Gray has done, it's worth the price, believe me! Enjoy it, I sure have, David is my favorite artist, there is just something about him, I can't wait to see him live. Oh, one more thing before I go. JUST BUY THIS AMAZING ALBUM AND ALL HIS OTHER ONES, PUT THEM ON RANDOM IN YOUR CD PLAYER, AND ENJOY DAVID!

One word: Amazing,

I first heard of David Gray on "Young Americans," and I immediately bought "White Ladder," for the featured songs. After falling in love with his voice and beautiful lyrics I had to hear more so I bought "Sell, Sell, Sell," and I was even more in love. I could listen to the album all night and never get tired of it. Everything from the fast-paced "Faster, Sooner, Now," to the slower "Gutters Full Of Rain," is amazing. This album is a must have.

In some ways even better than "White Ladder",

As the other customer reviews indicate, this is not as techno-driven as "White Ladder", which is an excellent CD in its own right. "Sell Sell Sell" is more acoustic, and also has a couple songs that are real rockers. Overall, I like the way his voice sounds here more than on "White Ladder".... less strain, or maybe it's just that I prefer his voice in a more natural sound-setting. Whatever, this is a great CD, and gives the listener a different David..... but still clearly recognizable as a major talent. Sure am glad that he's finally broken through and that this CD is available again.

David Doesn't Miss the Mark!,

David Gray is definitely one of the great artists of our time. I absolutely fell in love with his music and his lyrics with the "White Ladder" album. Soon I was obsessed with buying anything from him that I could get my hands on."Sell Sell Sell" is more guitar driven than the successful "White Ladder" but it doesn't miss the mark. David's poetic lyrics are still there along with his angst. There are several songs on this album that could be released today and be smash hits...if only given a chance. If you loved "White Ladder", give this one a try. You won't be disappointed.

Everyone who has bought and listened to White Ladder, the album that finally launched David Gray's career, wonders what this man might have been doing before this succesful album, because (like myself) have never heard of the man before.Well, I am quite happy to say that he has been making quality albums before White Ladder, but these have just been unnoticed since present. His older work gets a new chance and Sell Sell Sell deserves this chance for every song that's on this magnificent album. The main difference with this album and White Ladder is that this CD is full of nice, guitar-and-drum-filled pop songs, with lyrics which seem to be intelligent and smart, but also emotionally driven. This last thing, together with Gray's powerful, folk voice and great melodies make that this album doesn't have a single song which misses your attention and your hart. The opening track, Faster Sooner Now, is a quick and ,surprisingly, radio-friendly rocksong which gets you immediately in the mood. From then on, the songs vary from folk to pop and, one of the highlights, live-brought ballad, like the emotional Smile. In some songs, Gray lets his accent run free for a bit and then you can really hear the man's a Welsh boy. It adds the feeling of hearing truly personal songs of this artist to this CD and all the mentioned elements together make a powerful CD with no detectable drawback. David Gray is for the moment on of those hot artists, largely known for White Ladder. Let this review be a stimulance for people to discover this other jewel from one of the most talented singer/songwriters who exists in todays decadading music scene which exists most of trashy, cheap pop music...

Great Talent on a Great CD,
By Todd Gray (Holt, Michigan United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sell Sell Sell (Audio CD)
The first song that i heard from David Gray was the radio friendly track "Babylon". I liked the song, but was not really convinced. I then heard the local college radio station playing "Please Forgive Me". Now i was hooked. This was a great singer/songwriter that showed a lot of promise. I then went and got White Ladder and was in love.Shortly after a friend told me that i should pick up the little known release "Sell, Sell, Sell". I went out and found it at a local record store, and fell in love with it right away. The CD starts off strong with the high-energy track "Faster, Sooner, Now" then moves on to the great "Late Night Radio". From here the CD moves on to the title track, and in the process keeps up the energy, with a transition that leads the songs to be less of pop material and more from the heart. David Gray is a great talent and an artist that looks to have a long bright future. Fans of White Ladder may want to look into this CD. It is a great supplement to that disc, while also being able to display the talents that Gray possesses. And a word to the wise, if he comes to your town live, get a ticket and see him. He is an incredible live performer.

If you liked "White Ladder"...,

David Gray's "Sell, Sell, Sell" was recorded two years prior to the recording of David's hit CD, "White Ladder". "Sell, Sell, Sell" is more of a rock n' roll album compared to "White Ladder", but I truely believe that it is David at his best. The CD features rockers like "Faster, Sooner, Now", & "Late Night Radio" (one of David's best by far), along with other mellow tunes common to David's other albums. I highly reccoment anybody who enjoys David's music to buy a copy of this album. "White Ladder" is now mainstream, but nobody out there has heard much of his other stuff, which is really too bad, because I really feel that it shows another side to David, equally as talented as the one we have seen already.Peace! |
