Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Going from poor Midwestern boy to sole owner of a highly successful tanning salon business, Hartl has lived a modern-day rags-to-riches story and is happy to share the secrets of his success in this well-organized, zippy book. Chapters begin by identifying what readers will learn and end by reminding them what they just learned; like any good motivational product, easy-to-remember tricks are employed to great effect. Chapters carry one-word titles beginning with P: People, Passion, Positivity, etc. Hartl often employs alliteration ("beware of clock-watchers, cave-dwellers, can-kickers") which, while occasionally corny, makes his points easy to grasp and remember. His liberal use of inspiring quotes from all walks of life is also effective, but it's his honest, straightforward approach to teaching that makes this book, his first, so appealing. Where many leaders offer platitudes like "Share what you know," leaving readers nodding vaguely, Hartl uses his own company, Planet Tan, as an illustrative example that will make readers want to actually implement something. The author is a big fan of mentors—both virtual and real—and is unabashedly proud to emphasize the "old-fashioned values" that helped him build his brand. He may be boastful but he's hard not to like. (Jan.)

This book is full of useful and achievable strategies to grow your business. It was well worth the purchase price for the abundant crop of tips I got out of it. There's no way each and every person who reads this won't walk away with at least one great idea to put in action!

This book is full of take away value. Tony does a great job of laying out business ideas and then giving examples from his years leading Plant Tan. We plan to use these ideas at Sunstone Yoga to improve our customer experience. This one of those books that I believe will have meaning at many stages of growing a company. i.e. A startup will pick up different things that a more mature venture.

As an entrepreneur, this book has made me realize how very little I actually know! It is jam-packed with practical lessons and tips that run the gamut from creating an incredible company culture, to developing the necessary systems and processes necessary to scale a fast-growth company. After reading about 50 pages I immediately purchased 6 extra copies to give to fellow entrepreneurs and am about order another 6. Simply put, reading this book is like mining through a vein of solid gold!

Loved the "tips" layout of this book, and loved how the specific advice in each section corresponded to a different issue within my business. I am in a field completely unrelated to tanning, but I found useful information in just about every chapter.

Terrific buy; I highly recommend this book.

What an inspiring story! To grow up "po" as the author said as a kid and to work his way to build a successful business from scratch and then selling for many millions...I found the story to be powerful and myself wanting to follow the same path. It shows through hard work, discipline and preparation that we can achieve our goals and reach our dreams.

What I also liked about the book is that it lays out all the strategies, thinking, tactics and steps that he took to reach his success. By laying out exactly what he did to reach his success, it gives you steps to follow yourself. As an entrepreneur who's had my own business for over 10 years, I found the information to be very helpful and found myself highlighting sections throughout the book. If you want to be inspired, to be driven, to be more successful, to be become at the game of business, get this book!

I admit to being a sucker for books that indicate they will give you 75 TIPS, TOOLS, AND TACTICS FOR BECOMING A WIDELY SUCCESSUFUL ENTREPRENEUR--to quote the subtitle of Tony Hartl's excellent book, SELLING SUNSHINE (Greenleaf Book Group).

Hartl founded Planet Tan in 1995 with three locations in the Dallas area . . . by 2008, the companies had 17 locations, employed 160 staff members and generated average sales of $1 million per location . . . he then sold his company and began writing this book.

I'm glad he did, too; i.e., share his ideas . . . in doing so, I also got to know more about Hartl--and that added to my enjoyment of his story.

In addition, I liked reading about how he described the way his company operates:

* Success is a choice. Hard work is a choice. Doing the right thing and doing right by others is a choice. The internal mantra for the company I founded sums it up nicely: "Work hard. Have fun. Make history." It's also the battle cry for successful entrepreneurship and how I got to where I am today.

Hartl also presents many suggestions for ways his company operated that could be used by just about any other company or organization:

* For example, if we'd just reached a certain milestone or if the team had hit a big goal, I'd call a meeting for all the employees in the support center, at the end of the day on a certain Friday, and tell them I had some important things to discuss. Once everyone arrived at the meeting, I'd announce that it was $100 Dollar Friday" and hand out $100 bills to all the staff. That's a great way to start a weekend, and a great way to keep your team motivated and excited after they've reached a milestone.
