Book Description

February 2, 2010 0230618936 978-0230618930

Anyone who has worked to sell a business knows how important it is to realize the full worth of the transaction, financially, psychologically, and with an eye towards the future. Selling Your Business for More is a holistic and values based approach to selling your family business that gives the family business owner a unique personal and professional perspective of the sales cycle.  It focuses on the entire process of selling--before, during and after--ensuring that the seller and the family reap the rewards from the change in ownership.

With decades of experience among them, Daniel R. Barron, Mary Geddes Boehler and Marian F. Cook lead you through each step of the daunting sale process, starting with a cold-eyed look at the reason you’re selling. They then progress through each crucial step of the process—timing, team-building, negotiating, communicating—and take you beyond signing the deal with advice for making your sale work in a smooth transition.  Each chapter details questions to answer and actions to take, and special topics include selling your firm in cold markets and minimizing taxes from the transaction.

If you are the owner of a small business in need of a change, this is a book you need to read before beginning the critical process of finding a buyer.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“When it comes to selling their business, many entrepreneurs and their descendants lack the help they really need. Sure, they can find technical answers but those don’t suffice when someone is selling a piece of their baby, their heritage, their birthright, their identity. For that they need special assistance found in Selling Your Business for More, a book that not only provides a ‘how to’ for a seller’s mind but also a ‘how to’ for a seller’s soul”—Lloyd E. Shefsky, Clinical Professor Entrepreneurship, Founder and Co-Director, Center for Family Enterprises, Kellogg School of Management

“So much is just right about this book. Selling Your Business for More is a series of strolls with seasoned guides through the most challenging transaction most entrepreneurs will ever undertake. In clear compact conversational prose the authors walk us through the complexities of business sale with special attention to human and family concerns. Particularly useful is their advice on successful adaptation to a new and strange environment after company has passed abruptly into the buyer’s hands. Sellers and their advisors will want to keep copies at arm’s reach during the deal – to use as a roadmap, working memorandum and communications switchboard.”--Gerald Le Van, Chair, Family Business and Wealth Mediation Group , Upchurch Watson White and Max

Selling Your Business For More is not just another ‘how to’ business text – the authors’ holistic perspectives incorporating their extensive and practical experiences related to family trust & personal wealth management is an essential read for any entrepreneur at a ‘crossroads’ of their business enterprise or career.  This highly illuminating discussion helps frame many of the diverse considerations of the business owner against the ‘art’ of M&A beyond the basic processes, numbers, and legal considerations.”--Michael Kim, Chairman & CEO, Global Gaming & Hospitality Capital Advisors

Selling Your Business for More delivers comprehensive guidance on transitioning your business while holding the reader's interest page after page. Unlike many M&A treatises, this book offers a broad perspective by masterfully blending the technical issues of selling a business with the emotional and psychological aspects.  The reader is continuously presented with thought-provoking questions to assist them in ‘Maximizing Returns for You, Your Family and the Business.’"-- Richard A. Schlueter, President, ComStock Advisors
