4.0 out of 5 stars Lower End Seal for a 1973 6hp Johnson Seahorse, August 5, 2009
This review is from: Seloc Marine Engine Maintenance And Repair Manuals Johnson Evindure Outboards 1 & 2 cyl. 1971 TO 198 (Misc.)
Since I am not an accomplished outboard motor mechanic, I needed a manual to guide me in disassembly and reassembly of the lower unit of my 1973 6 hp Johnson motor. It had been leaking gear oil during my last two outings, plus the lower unit would drip gear oil when not in use. This manual was a good document with adequate photos and discussion concerning lower unit maintenance and repair. However, if you own one of these old motors, be aware that the reassembly requires you to insert the drive shaft into the power head while, at the same time, to align the water pump discharge tube into the the discharge port inside the motor. This tube routes the pumped water to the power head for engine cooling. You cannot see the discharge port during reassembly so it is a trial and error process that can be quite frustrating for a one time mechanic. I was not sure that I had properly inserted the tube until I started the engine and observed the cooling water exit from the water discharge opening. My only criticism of the manual is that it does not provide any clue as to the best procedure to assure the water tube is properly aligned so that it can be seated in the port. If this tube is not properly in place, you run the risk of serious engine damage. All in all, a good product for a rookie engine mechanic!
