A Good Overview, September 20, 2002
This review is from: Sem Limite (Audio CD)
Milton Nascimento is one of Brazil's most famous singer-songwriters. His career started in the 1960s, and he is still performing and recording now. His song-writing skills are exemplary, but don't expect a stereotypically Brazilian sound: his songs are sophisticated pop, more like late 60s Lennon and Macartney than the bossa nova or samba.
This double cd is a good overview of Nascimento's career. If you are interested in finding out more about his music, this collection is a fine place to start. It includes songs, some of them live, from a wide variety of his albums. He has a beautiful voice, and his songs are rythmically complex and lyrical.
Unfortunately, the lyrics are not included, but since this is essentially a greatest hits collection, modestly priced, I suppose it would be too much to expect. I say unfortunately, because Nascimento's lyrics are thoughtful and imaginative, and it would be nice to be able to understand what he is saying. (However, if you're interested, it is possible to get the lyrics other places.)
To sum up, this is a generous selection of some of the best songs by one of Brazil's most important and popular singer-songwriters. The sound quality is fine; the quality of the packaging could be improved. As an introduction to Nascimento, this is a very good buy.
