5.0 out of 5 stars The Essential Synergy Compendium, August 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Semi-Conductor Release 2 (Audio CD)
This has it all... Well, almost. From realizations based on Richard Roger's "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue", to Mason Williams' "Classical Gas" and original works like "Delta One" and "Metropolitan Suite" make this THE essential disk if you only buy one by Synergy! Larry Fast's PolyMoog, Oberheim Expanders and ring modulators are on full tilt in this disk, and show not only Fast's development as a performer, but as a technician. Pure Poetry.

My only disappointment, "Redstone" wasn't included.

...if he'd been as much of a composer as a player. And this dude built his own instruments to boot! There's a lot that's great and some not so great on this compilation. Great as in all the "Delta" titles, the Strausslike waltz "To the Edge and Back" (a rarity not on the regular albums), "Launch At Dawn" (another rarity) and "Metropolitan Theme". Not so great with most of the covers like "Classical Gas" and "Slaughter On 10th Avenue" ("Largo From the New World Symphony" isn't too bad, but how can you miss with the tune we more commonly know as "Goin' Home"). I share another reviewer's disappointment with the omission of "Redstone", a track from "Metropolitan Suite" that captures the twangy surf rock guitar sound perfectly. Oh yes, I forgot--this is the work of one Larry Fast, who played a huge part in the early Peter Gabriel solo sound.

This set is good. Very good. The artist is good. Very good. Unfortunately the set and the artist are inconsistant. I was looking forward to hearing Synergy's version of "Classical Gas" and could barely recognize it. Mason Williams would scratch his head in confusion and "say whu'?". On the other end of the spectrum, the cut "Ancestors" is incredible! The perfect sound for testing high dollar speakers, quality headphone and expensive soundsystems. This song alone is almost worth the price of the CDs. "Launch at Dawn" is a fine piece, too. Most of the rest of these CDs are forgettable. But perhaps it's because I've been a Rick Wakeman fan for thirty years, or Mannheim Steamroller fan for fifteen, but I'd prefer them just a little bit more. No mistake, I enjoyed about 90% this two-CD set and will for many years to come, but I firmly believe Wakeman's "King Arthur" and "Henry VIII" and Mannheim Steamroller's "Fresh Aire" and "25 Years" are far superior in technique, variety, quality and creativity. A better album would be Wakeman's "Rhapsodies", but I've not been able to find it on CD. In the acoustic olympics, Synergy and "Semi-Conductor Release 2" takes the bronze.
