I have several of SAndra Lee's cookbooks and find them all great. The Semi-Homemade Money-Saving Slow Cooking book fits its title. I find it so handy in making meals while I am busy with other things and am still able to present a nurishing, economical meal. This is so important during this particular economic time. Sandra has proved to be a great help with her ideas.

I bought this book because I like the fact that it had pictures for almost every recipe. I am a visual type of person and I like to see the finished product, and this book offered that, so I bought it. I have made some recipes from it already and they seem pretty accurate to the pictures. I am very glad I found this book. I am not a very good cook and this book showed me that I can make more than meat dishes. Who knew you can do desserts in a slow cooker!
I highly recommend this Slow Cook Book to any beginner! I made the beef stew and when I ate it, I felt like I was a GREAT cook! Worth the money!

I got this cookbook because I started working full time and am never home before 8:30pm. To make this short, it's a good cookbook, but the cooking time are too short for what I had in mind. I was hoping for recipes that took 8 to 10 hours and most of these are for only 3 hours or so. But the recipes that I have made have been good. It was worth Amazons price of $13. If I had paid the bookstore price of $20 I would have been mad!

I recently purchased this cookbook looking for some new slow cooker recipes for my family. I made two recipes, the Fiesta Mac'n'Cheese, and the Irish Pub Brisket. The Fiesta Mac'n'Cheese was so disapointing, there was a really weird flavor, I think it was the combination of the shredded beef in BBQ sauce, chili seasoning mix and the mild chiles. The whole dish just tasted off, and my two sons wouldn't eat it at all. The brisket was even worse. The use of pickling spice, beer and horseradish was absolutely disgusting, and with the cabbage created a stink that I am still trying to get out of my house. You know it's going to be bad when your children gag as they walk in the door from school. My husband who will eat just about anything, quickly dumped the potates down the disposal, they were infused by the most disusting, bizzare, bitter flavor. Now I know why Sandra Lee is so thin, there is no way she is eating more than a bite of any of these dishes. There is an entire chapter of desserts including many cakes where you are supposed to make a foil ring and add water to the crock pot and bake a cake in a 8x3 inch round cake pan. Why wouldn't you just use the oven? This is way more work that is necessary for a simple cake. I am very disapointed in this cookbook and I won't be making any more of these recipes. It is not that much more work to chop garlic or onions instead of using frozen onions or canned and the results are so much better. If you are looking for easy and delicious recipes for your family I would recommend Rachael Ray Top 30 30-Minute meals Kid Food.

The spicy sweet potatoes were a big hit at Thanksgiving, and the recipe was so easy to follow.

To be fair, I have not tried cooking any recipes from this book yet. I looked through all the recipes, and nothing really jumped out at me like, 'Hey, I want to make that!!' I'll update further if I actually try to cook something.

I enjoy reading through the recipes of Sandra Lee's. I especially like her cookbooks/magazines as they are simple; plus one can create a recipe with what we have in the pantry. All recipes are money-saving and inspirational. It's like gourmet cooking without going to all the expense and labor...plus, fun.

Great buy / Money Saver,

I bought this book and have tried multiple recipes that have been amazing!
I must say, some of the recipes have a long list of ingredients and I "cheat" by using a less expensive alternative and it still comes out great. For example, a recipe call for Dried Italian Seasoning - I had a Italian Salad Dressing in a bottle and it worked perfectly. Also, I have used a reciped that called for fresh diced tomatoes - I used a can of diced tomatoes and it was great too! The recipies make many servings and saves my family a lot of money! |
