This review is from: Semiconductor-Laser Physics (Hardcover)
This a very useful book for a researcher just entering field of semiconductor lasers. I would even say that the scope of the book is broader than that - the authors give quite a good picture of kinetic phenomena in optically excited semiconductors, as opposed to mainly static phenomena discussed in Haug&Koch's book. The presentation is very logical: the reader gets basic background on the device structure and fabrication, the possible levels of physical description, numerous kinetic processes involved, necessary elementary background on band structure calculations, etc.
The book should be quite useful for researches rather than students, since the presentation implies firm knowledge of quantum mechanics and laser physics. On the other hand, the presentation is not on the highest level of theoretical complexity, which is a general characteristic of this field, where theorists work very close to experiment and necessity for numerical calculations arise on a rather early stage of research, preventing one from developing too complicated concepts and using overextensive mathematical apparatus. I do not know, if an experimentalists will ever have need to go beyond the theory outlined in this book. Just one bit of complaint: the formalism based on trancation of the equations for averages, used in this book, may cause slight irritation, as it was used in many other books and reviews, and is often repeated in exactly the same words. Nevertheless it is a very practical approach, and readily usable for a newcomer. I highly recommend this book as a first introduction to semiconductor optics for those who just start doing research in this field. |
