Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6?Two introductory overviews. Each title touches on history before European contact, the adaptations and tragedies resulting from it, the group's culture and traditions, and the challenges of modern life. The social structure built around family and clan relationships is described, illustrating the traditional duties of men, women, and children. Descriptions of foods and religious celebrations illustrate social interactions. Andryszewski covers little of basic Seminole beliefs. Bonvillain gives a fine treatment of the Navajo religion and world view, and their belief in the Holy People. Illustrations include photographs, both historical and contemporary; sketches; and paintings. A physical map of the U.S. shows a shaded boundary for the tribe. Each title includes a recipe, a native legend, and game instructions for Seminole pole-ball and a modern Navajo song, respectively. Two well-organized books that will be a boon to report writers. One correction: the Navajos came to the Southwest in the 11th century, not the 15th, as mentioned here.?Jacqueline Elsner, Athens Regional Library, GA
