Editorial Reviews

Review

An urban woman artist arrives in a small southwestern town near the Mexican border at the invitation of the town priest. She has come to paint murals in his church, not knowing that the church has burned down in a catastrophic fire. The artist becomes the catalyst for the town's release of its collective guilt, allowing the rebuilding of the church and a truce between the Catholic priest and the town's old woman healer. In the process she faces her own terrifying nightmares, their source and the resolution of her sexual identity. Send My Roots Rain is a wonderfully engaging, fast-paced, brilliantly written novel. -- Midwest Book Review

3.0 out of 5 stars Three and a half!, August 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Send My Roots Rain (Paperback)
I absolutely enjoyed this book, which was engrossing from page one. The editorial reviews and the other customer review are pretty much on target. The only thing I'd like to add is that unfortunately in the last two-thirds the author made a few leaps that weren't entirely plausible. I call it "first novel jitters." Nonetheless, these advances in the plot don't detract from the overall allure of the story. It's definitely a worthwhile read.

This review is from: Send My Roots Rain (Paperback)
Gomez-Vega, a very distinguished Cuban-born writer, spins an artistic tale by weaving the lives and loves of several southwestern women together. This book explores the many internal conflicts and external prejudices a woman may encounter as she struggles to define her sexual identity. This book is a must read; it will touch a cord in young women with similar struggles as well as show the rest of the world that these women live and love much like the rest: with devotion and passion, and in the midst of a family environment. Gomez-Vega includes many controversial subjects in her work: the pain of parental loss and disproval, religious skepticism, and community discord. In the end, however, she is able to paint a complete picture. Although not perfect, it shines a hopeful light on the sexual revolution.
