It’s quite a miraculous fleet: after 57 years, Johnny Mathis is still on the same major label that first launched his career. He is currently the only 78 year-old on Columbia Records’ sharing the same roster as Nine Inch Nails, St. Lucia and Beyonce. And while many of his peers are already in their rocking chairs, this septuagenarian has just released his brand new Christmas record “Sending You a Little Christmas.” Just in case you are wondering, this is his seventh festive offering starting off with “Merry Christmas” (1958), “The Sound of Christmas” (1963), “Give Me Your Love for Christmas” (1969), “For Christmas” (1984), “Christmas Eve With Johnny Mathis” (1986) and “The Christmas Album” (2002). One of the reasons for the longevity of Mathis’ almost six-decade career is that you can always count on him to deliver his patented style of love songs. Against a backdrop of rock music, Mathis has had never been threatened to compromise. Never resorting to crackle with the latest guitar riffs or the trendiest beats, Mathis has always allowed his identifiable tremulous tenor to carry each and every of his record.

Teaming up again with producer Fred Mollin (Jimmy Webb, Billy Ray Cyrus & Barbra Streisand) who has worked with Mathis on his last album “Let It Be Me: Mathis in Nashville,” “Sending You a Christmas” is the best amongst Mathis’ canon of Christmas offerings. On this record, there are two major departures relative to his preceding seasonal album “The Christmas Album.” First, while “The Christmas Album” was very much a solo effort, this time around Mathis has surrounded himself with distinguished vocals. Flown in to contribute to the microphone are established stars like Billy Joel, Natalie Cole, Gloria Estefan and the Jordanaires.

This is a stunning Christmas album with a number of pleasant surprises. Johnny, at age 78, proves he can still boogie with a great up tempo take on Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" and, backed by the Jordanaires, he gives a Nashville touch to "Home for the Holidays." Others have already lauded the gorgeous duet with Susan Boyle on "Do You Hear What I Hear?" but I think the selection that moves me most is the pairing of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" with "White Christmas." Johnny sings with both Vince Gill and Amy Grant on this medley and it takes my breath away. I had never felt the anguish of either song as much as I do in this inspired coupling. Much credit for this beautiful album must go to Fred Mollin, the producer, because, not only are the arrangements intelligent and fresh, but the sound and balance are flawless. As a lover of acoustic guitar, I have never heard this instrument used more effectively than on this album. Just listen to the beginning of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and you'll know what I mean. I hope Fred Mollin produces Johnny's next album for it's clear that they bring out the best in each other. "Sending You a Little Christmas" is the most wonderful holiday album Johnny has done since his very first one over 50 years ago. Christmas and Mathis: still perfect together!

I just listened to the entire CD and it is GREAT! The title song is one I have not heard before and it is delightful. Billy Joel and John compliment each other nicely singing the classic "Christmas Song". My favorite duet has to be "Do You Hear What I Hear" with Susan Boyle - absolutely beautiful. "Home for the Holidays" with Johnny and the Jordanaires is upbeat and snappy and really fun! I really enjoyed "Merry Christmas Darling" (one of my all time favorite Christmas songs)and the only thing that would make it better is if Karen Carpenter were here to sing it with Mr. Mathis. The musical arrangements are classy and so pleasing to the ear and the choice of songs gives a variety of Christmas classics and more modern tunes. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys holiday music ~ there's something for everyone!

Johnny Mathis and "Sending You A Little Christmas" is a wonderful experience. I am not certain how many Christmas records Johnny has recorded, but this one is a true winner. Johnny is 78 years old, and sounds like a angel. While many may not believe me-just listen, and I think you will agree.
There are some wonderful duets here, just love Natalie Cole, Gloria Estefan, and Vince Gill, and Amy Grant. There is a true blending of the voices we rarely hear today. The duet with Billy Joel comes off very nice.
"Merry Christmas Darling" is my favorite song on this cd. Just total Mathis Magic. I really love this song, one of my favorite singers-singing one of my all time favorite Christmas song-Who could ask for more.
I could go on and on. Johnny Mathis is a National Treasure and I truely believe that to be a fact.
I wish all of you the best Mathis Christmas ever.

No one sings a love song or a beautiful Christmas song better than Johnny Mathis. When you put love and Christmas together look no further than the God given talent of Johnny Mathis to give it life. Someone once said Christmas just ain't Christmas without Johnny Mathis....How true...I wrote that review for a Mathis video on YouTube some years ago and it's still true today as it was then. I love this new Christmas CD. Some of the songs are new recordings from previous Mathis Christmas albums, with fresh new arrangements and now includes duets with some other talented singers, Billy Joel, Natalie Cole, Gloria Estefan and Susan Boyle and others. There are also new Christmas songs that do not appear on other Mathis Christmas albums, my favorites so far are "Count Your Blessings", "This Christmas" and "Merry Christmas Darling". I say so far because, the more I listen to a Johnny Mathis recording I hear something in the song that makes it grow on me. Great work Mr. Mathis, keep the Christmas and love songs coming.
