Wonderful book!,
This review is from: Senior Dogs For Dummies (Paperback)
This book just won a 2004 Maxwell award from the Dog Writers Association of America in the Book: care and health category, and with good cause. McCullough knows what she's talking about. She covers nutrition, exercise, health cost, typical diseases, what to expect, and - of course - a discussion on when is the best time to let your friend go. Housebreaking can be a problem for some seniors, and McCullough recommends bringing out the crate. Certain problems that seniors are prone to, such as going blind or deaf, are discussed, as well as how to help your dog cope. Her practicality and compassionate approach to canine senior citizens, who deserve to lounge about in the sunshine, comes through clearly. Much of what she says is common sense, but if you haven't experienced what happens to a senior dog, this book will really help you prepare, understand what is happening, and what you can do about it.

This is a great resource! I have a 9 year old Sheltie with some health issues and I found this book to have terrific information specific to older dogs. It's a good read straight through or as a reference if you're just looking for information on a particular subject.

This book is an excellent resource and an easy read for anyone with a senior dog. It brings to an owner's attention many areas of aging in a pet similar to human aging. It also gives good advice on dealing with problems encountered with an aging pet.

At 14, my Wren was well into old age when I bought the Kindle version of this book last month. His puppy side had diminished quite a bit but was still in evidence until the the last the last year or so of his life when his age really showed. Wren was the second dog I saw through the golden years but it had been 14 years since the last one and I needed a refresher. I did have another book on seniors but couldn't find it. I got this book just in time, I think. The week before Christmas, I had to make that final decision. Actually, Wren kind of made it for me, as they sometimes do. I knew I had to do the best for him that I could and the parts of this book pertaining to my situation really helped. The writer goes into all of it, even the hard stuff and in the days following Wren's last visit to the vet, I found a bit of comfort in her words. I would recommend this book be bought at anytime during your dog's life but especially as they approach the senior years so that you can be prepared for what you'll experience, even if it's not the first time you've made the journey. This book goes into all of the older dog experiences you'll have and more. The writer also goes into how to make the painful decision when it's time, how to know when it is time to make that decision, how to cope with the loss once the decision is made and lots of other helpful advice. I'll be glad to have this available when my next dog reaches this stage.

This book came in the mail the day before we had to put our precious Abby (our Miniature Schnauzer) down do to total kidney failure. My husband and I were both devestated as she had been our baby for almost 12 years. We were trying to decide what we needed and wanted to do. This book was amazing in helping us with answers. We would of never thought to take her "brother" our Lab/Springer mix with us to the vet. The book said he needed to know that she was gone and not just wonder why she wasn't home and where she was. This book was hard reading at the time due to the subject matter we needed but I am thankful it was there to help us through. It's coming time when we may need the help again as our big boy is 12 years old now.
