Lot's of good material and helpful information. With the base theme of anything non vegan is not good it is somewhat limited in its use if you are not a Vegan. Outside of that I found it an informative, helpful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jump start your journey to health and fitness, August 27, 2005
This review is from: Senior Fitness: The Diet and Exercise Program for Maximum Health and Longevity (Paperback)
By most reasonable standards Senior Fitness is an exceptional book on health and fitness. Its basic message is simple and intellectually sound. The recommendations are based on both solid science (multiple studies with convergent findings) and the results of the author's own heroic battle against cancer. On a personal level I found the book quite inspiring, providing just the impetus I needed to adjust my personal diet and exercise regimen. Dr. Heidrich doesn't equivocate or offer us simplistic solutions that require no work on our part, but the reward of good health and a vigorous old age should more than justify our efforts. The message is clear, the science is sound and if you're looking for a good book to jump start your own personal fitness program this is a great place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book -- Not Just for Seniors, October 30, 2006

This book--this author--has changed the lives of several people I know including my own. The information contained within far exceeded my expectations for this book. It should be read by everyone. I would have given it 10 stars if I could have.

You should know that you will not get this information from your doctor. Most doctors know very little about the impact of nutrition and exercise on the most common diseases since it has not been until recent times that nutrition and fitness has been taught in medical schools. I especially recommend it especially to people of any age who are trying to prevent or overcome cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis, alzheimers, obesity.

I promise you will be inspired by this book! [...]

This is an incredible book. I purchased it in June of 2006 and as of July 2006 I have already lost weight without any pain and frustration. It is easy to follow the advice and the facts are backed up by the research that was done. I am happy to say I have lost almost 12 lbs and the pounds are continuing to come off.

This is an easy read book and it is working for me. I have even given my 20+ year old son a copy. You are never to young to start taking care of you body.

Dr. Ruth's personal battle resulted in extensive research done by her for the benefit of all of us (male or female). She wanted answers to why she was ill and discovered that her illness (and its causes) were not all that unique. The rarity is in applying the information to one's lifestyle. Don't sit back and wait for yourself to become ill, use preventative measures to promote good health long into your "prime years" so that you won't have to be at the mercy of drugs, doctors and nursing homes like many of our parents.

This book was very inspiring, and motivated me to start a daily exercise program of walking and running.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Out There, February 27, 2008

I was searching for a book for a friend and ran across other books on running for seniors. Those reviews weren't very good, then I remembered this book that I read a couple of years ago. I realized that it was still timely, informative and the best info I've read on how to run safely until you're 100. I've followed the information in this book and it has allowed me to resume my running passion, place in races for my age group and just be content with finishing.
For those who say it may be a little difficult to follow the eating suggestions, it is much more difficult to watch friends and family succumb to the diseases of affluence...routinely having their chest cracked open for heart disease, going blind from diabetes, and enduring chemo. Ruth's program really works, you feel so much better, and interestingly, is similar to how the Olympic Kenyans eat. Well-researched, she quotes the works of Dr. John McDougall and Dr. Neal Barnard. Their work and books ought to be worthy of Nobel Prizes, for all the hundreds of thousands of people those doctors have helped over the years! 5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book! NOT just for seniors!!!, January 18, 2009

I love this book so much that I keep renewing it from the library... can't seem to part with it.

Ruth Heidrich is such an inspiration, I truly wish I could get everyone I know to read this book. While reading it I kept thinking that this information needs to be read by people of all ages in hopes of preventing the ailments commonly associated with aging.

I first heard about Ruth Heidrich on a health website & then spent some time googling her. There are interviews on youtube which are interesting, but the book is better at consolidating everything into what you MUST know for your best possible health.

I agree with another reviewer - I'd give this book 10 stars if I could. Thank you Ruth for being an inspiration to us mere mortals who aspire to healthier lifestyles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Senior Fitness by Ruth Heidrich, March 18, 2011

This review is from: Senior Fitness: The Diet and Exercise Program for Maximum Health and Longevity (Paperback)
This is a book that should be read by everyone. The word Senior should not have been used in the title because it might keep younger people from reading it and benefitting from its message. The sooner one starts on a fitness program the better it is for them. She ran 67 marathons in 67 years and won 6 Ironman Triathalons and has over 900 trophies. She applies principles advocated by Pritikin, Ornish, Esselstyn, McDougall, Cooper and others. She should be the poster person for anyone advocating better nutrition. Her bone density increased as she grew older. She is one of about 75 "Star McDougallers" who have improved their health. What an inspiring story. Buy two copies--one for yourself and one for your library so people can see what can be done to change the nutrition of this nation and learn about creating health rather than treating disease. Maybe if our young citizens were aware of these principles we wouldn't see high school and college athletes dying.

America is 1st in degenerative disease and 26th in longevity. It's about time we improved our health and reduced the pain and cost of treating disease by preventing or delaying its onset. This book shows what individuals can do to improve their health.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Seniors Who Want the Best in Life, July 26, 2011
This review is from: Senior Fitness: The Diet and Exercise Program for Maximum Health and Longevity (Paperback)
I first saw this book mentioned on FirePointe.com, a senior site dedicated to romance and an energetic lifestyle. Then I read books like Dr. Ruth's SEX AFTER 50 and Jeoffrey and Renee Powell's SEASONED ROMANCE, and saw an overall pattern emerging...to live life to the fullest and enjoy romance and wellness and a great attitude more than ever, fitness is both basic and imperative.

All this caused me to start making changes. I ordered Senior Fitness and a couple of other related strength and stretching books. This one is a great primer for all seniors, regardless of your health background. It takes from from A to Z, and builds on a growing desire to get stronger, healthier and more agile.

You can't go wrong with Senior Fitness! And what a difference a better body makes in every area of life, including lovemaking.
