1.0 out of 5 stars Financial Issues Addressed
This book overall was disappointing. It is full of "financial solutions, do a reverse mortgage, buy insurance etc pushing institutional care."

I confess I was looking for "hands on" face to face type solutions. Day to day issues for me won't go away. Parents don't want assisted care. They don't want nursing home care. They want to stay together, one has...

Having seen four of my family members, including both sets of parents and in-law parents who have needed special care and attention during periods of aging, disability and dying, I had to learn by trial and error. Unfortunately, many times it was by error.

Valerie has clearly and concisely covered a very difficult subject in a very easy to read, relatively short book. She is to be commended for including such areas as VA Home Aid and Attendant Services Grants. I had never heard about them before. She also establishes reverse mortgages as a viable way of handling financial needs for seniors aged 62 and over. At the end of the book is a very comprehensive reference guide to several outstanding websites.

All in all, this book is outstanding....especially as more and more people are aging and joining the "sandwich generation"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Senior should read this book! A wealth of information., September 25, 2007
This review is from: The Senior Solution: A Family Guide to Keeping Seniors Home For Life! (Paperback)
Valerie has taken her experience and knowledge and put it into a book that any individual can understand and put to good use. I think every Senior should have this book and it is an excellent gift for parents, grandparents, healthcare givers and children of Seniors. The list goes on and on. I plan to use this book with all of my clients as a Cash Flow Planner and loan officer for reverse mortgages. A great big Thank You to Valerie for taking the time from her very busy life to write such an important book.

I have been working with seniors for over 20 years and have found this to be one of the best, most accurate and easy to read books available on the subject of ageing and long term care solutions. I would highly reccommend it to the many babyboomers and/or their parents. It is must reading if we are going to start solving the long term care crisis in this country.

I've recently had the opportunity to read "The Senior Solution" by Valerie Van Booven-Whitsell, RN, BSN, PGCM. This book looks at the issues faced by seniors and their adult children, it covers all aspects of challenges that seniors face and gives clear, concise workable answers to them. This is a book whose cost is a worthwhile investment for seniors and their families as well as the advisors that work in the senior marketplace.

This review is from: The Senior Solution: A Family Guide to Keeping Seniors Home For Life! (Paperback)
When you're faced with the problem(s) of dealing with ageing parents, your spouse, or even your own situation, you must start somewhere. This book not only provides the place to start, it explains in understandable language what to do, why do it, and how. I've been professionally counseling seniors for the past five years, and without a doubt, this is the most complete, easy to read and understand book you'll find. In addition to a concise, thorough and clear text, the author includes an abundance of references to help you find even more information to guide you in finding solutions to your individual situation. You won't go wrong with this book.

This review is from: The Senior Solution: A Family Guide to Keeping Seniors Home For Life! (Paperback)
Thank you Ms. Van Booven-Whitsell for providing this eminently practical and informative guide for us "adult children" seeking for ways to best provide for our aging parents.

Linking the proceeds of a reverse mortgage with Long Term Care insurance fills a tremendous void in the affordability gap, all while enabling seniors to retain their dignity and independence by staying in their homes!

This is an excellent discussion of both the desires of seniors to remain at home during periods of the need for long-term care...and options to permit them to remain at home. I recommend this book not only for seniors, but more for the children of these seniors to guide them in advising their parents.
