4.0 out of 5 stars accurately captures parenting in 2006
I read this book after hearing good things about it from two members of my family. Many of the low ratings had scared me off originally, but I took the plunge and am glad I did. I should say that one reason I might have liked this book is that I could relate to so much of it: I was in high school in the Boston area at the same time as Dan Shaughnessy, and I have three...

1.0 out of 5 stars Great book if you are having trouble sleeping
This book is a snoozefest. Luckily I didn't waste my own money, I got it as a gift. I just hope whoever gets my copy from the Goodwill doesn't have to pay more than a quarter for it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tedious., July 9, 2007
This review is from: Senior Year: A Father, A Son, and High School Baseball (Hardcover)
The phrase "singing above your range" springs to mind with this book. Simply put, a sports columnist--which is what Shaughnessy is--may be capable of snark or thoughtful commentary on current events in sports, but may not be capable of making the quotidian involving or moving. I think I understand the book Shaughnessy wanted to write--unfortunately, he's not good enough as a writer to write that book.

Fairly quickly I found myself not caring about father or son or what happened, and was in that most distressing place for a reader: checking to see how many more pages I'd have to read before the book was over and I could read something more interesting.

This book wasn't actively bad, nor was it offensive. It was just tedious, and a waste of time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent, a waste of time, July 9, 2007

I read this book while on a long hunting trip in Alaska. I was out to shoot me a bear and it seemed to me that something like this would keep me warm on those long summer nights above the artic circle. I ended up bagging a big old bear and that made the trip worthwhile. Unfortunately, I did not like this book. It seemed like the sun would never set while I was up there and I think this book literally slowed down time so much that the sun got stuck. I was really expecting something more along the lines of "Hoosiers" meets "Porky's" and what I got was nothing like that. NO stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars It could have been better, July 9, 2007
This review is from: Senior Year: A Father, A Son, and High School Baseball (Hardcover)
I love to read books about father and son relationships. Except this one. I knew for sure I was making a good purchase because the author was Dan Shaughnessy. Unfortunately, this type of style was not the one that suits my liking. The first few chapters were ok, and then I was sucked into the longest senior year of my life. Help. But the worst is over now. Coming to you live from my mothers' basement with domino's delivery and an exhilirating, nerdy Dungeons and Dragons game.....

The author's daughter actually sent out an email to friends asking them to write positive reviews here at Amazon. Amazing... the guy's daughter has to do his fighting for him. Personally, I found the writing pedestrian. Not terrible, just uninteresting. I guess that if I knew him personally it might be interesting, but it's like reading someone's dinner table talk.

Folks, this is Shaughnessy's attempt to horn in on the coveted Mitch Albom sappy personal story genre. It works about as well as anything else he's written, which is to say - it doesn't.

Reading this book is like being super thirsty, grabbing a carton of milk out of the 'frige, downing it quickly, and then realizing to your horror that it is full of lumps and expired 3 months ago. Just terrible!

I'm not sure why Mr. Shaughnessy thought people would be interested in this story. It is quite simply the most boring book I've read in the last five years. Pure and total garbage.

2.0 out of 5 stars slightly disappointed, July 9, 2007
This review is from: Senior Year: A Father, A Son, and High School Baseball (Hardcover)
when i first decideD to buy the book at my local barnEs & noble i was very excited. afterAll it was written by Dan shaughnessy the greatest sports writer of our generation. next to peter veScey of course. what i got instead was an overly dramatized account of a Painfully common story. fairly well written but the subject matter drove me to constantly reflect how much my own experience as a senIor, which is nothing excitiNg, was.....more exciting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great story. Compelling, and rich., July 9, 2007
This review is from: Senior Year: A Father, A Son, and High School Baseball (Hardcover)
For anyone who has ever been somebody's son, or daughter, or mother, or father (even if only a weekend daddy), Mr. Shaughnessy's book serves as the perfect companion to a tall glass of Tuscan Whole Milk, 1 Gallon, 128 fl oz.

Mr. Shaughnessy is so wise. He's like a minature Buddha, covered in curly, red hair.
