3.0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) - Misfits Unite
What happens when a group of students with nothing in common find themselves in the same after-school program? In SENIORITIS, author Tate Thompson explores this very question through a group of zany characters, all of whom are not quite as they seem. Mr. T. is by far the most popular teacher in the high school in which he teaches, and he uses this popularity to make...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Young Adult Novel! Nothing else quite like it!, June 16, 2003

Senioritis is a young adult novel that will actually resonate with teenage readers. Capturing the diverse voices of a group of discontent teenagers, Thompson explores the very real problems of today's high schoolers. Unlike a lot of young adult novels, which only dance on the edge of serious issues, this novel directly addresses sex, depression, racism, abusive boyfriends, and disappointment in hypocritical adults. The novel pulls no punches in dealing with these issues, yet ultimately celebrates the amazing resilience of today's youth. With seven narrative voices coming together to tell a fast-paced story, everyone will find a character to identify with. Each of these narrators must successfully complete the after-school program in order to graduate, but this is only a starting point for all the internal strife and external drama that engulfs the students as they begin to move beyond high school and into a new world where they must discover their own values and voices. From Nakiesha--a sistah with serious attitude--to the intellectual Gemini--who sits in a desk "pondering the ramifications of my recent juvenile impulsiveness"--these are all characters who immediately jump off of the page and into the reader's heart. As a lover of young adult fiction, I was thrilled to find a book that actually captures the voices of real young people--black and white, male and female. This is quite an accomplishment by Tate Thompson, and Senioritis is a book to be read, read again, and shared with friends. You will love it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!, September 14, 2003
By

This review is from: Senioritis (Paperback)
This book was amazing in every way. I have never read a book that showed more about what teenage life is all about these days. The problems these few teenagers incountered throughout this book completely blew me away. I never would have thought a 17 year old boy could be half as brilliant as Gemini was. The author of this book is a truely amazing writer. I read about scandals I had thought only a full grown adult could handle, but these students, who were thought to be deliquents, managed to get by easily. Through much suffering and sadness along with great joy these kids learned who they really were. This books makes its reader feel as if they are in the same classroom with these students struggling to figure out where to go next in their lives. I felt like I was apart of their lives, in their world while I read. I couldn't put this book down once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Young Adult Book Written!, September 22, 2003

I believe that this book has been one of the best written young adult books ever! The author is very talented and seems to know how to grab the attention of an audience, young and old! I love how he can write a whole book full of journals from characters he's made up and make it sound as if it were from actual students! This book really shows his passion for understanding and communicating with his students! Good Luck on your future books Tate Thompson! You're going to go far as an author, you are a great writer!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rare Teacher, October 12, 2003

Definitely a page turner! It is obvious that Mr Thompson is a teacher that cares about his students, and is not in the classroom just collecting a check. It takes a special person to reach out to the children that are present in our schools today and there are not many with the ability to touch the kids lives like Mr Thompson has been able to. This book grabs the minds of young teens and is a book that they are bound to finish. Mr Thompson has a talent that will enable him to touch childrens lives outside the children that are privledged enough to have him as a teacher and mentor. Although I believe this can be an eye opener for some, it does touch on things that actually happen in childrens lives today. If read with an open mind it may acutually bring some of us out of our "box" and into what is real in the majority of schools throughout our country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Senioritis, June 19, 2003

Senioritis is a wonderful read. It has characters that will find their way into your heart. You will feel what the characters feel and will most likely identify with at least one of the characters in the book. It was sad, funny, and made me think back to when I was a senior in high school and the relationships I had back then. If you want a book that will toy with your emotions and is a quick read, this book is it. I highly recommend it. It's worth your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Inspiring to a "Wannabe" Educator, September 25, 2003

This review is from: Senioritis (Paperback)
As an aspiring teacher, I read the book "Senioritis" at the recommendation of (of all people) my Dad. He loved the book and thought it would introduce me to the "real world" of high school education. Once again, Father does know best.

The book was insightful and inspiring. I could relate, in some way, to each of the fictional characters in Mr. Thompson's book. Senioritis portrays the life of high school students just as it is, no sugarcoating. I admire Mr. Thompson for being brave enough to write this book from the standpoint of the students, rather than how the teachers view the students, not many teachers are able to see into their students' minds and truly relate to them.

Thank you, Mr. Thompson, for a wonderfully written tribute to what life in high school is really like! I can't wait to read your next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredibly Impressive "Must Read", October 11, 2003
By

After reading Senioritis, I am eagerly awaiting a sequel. Tate Thompson's style of writing is a witty, realistic, and refreshing. Topics covered in the book are very relevent to today's teens. Thompson does not sugercoat the tough issues that today's teens encounter. I passed this book along to my teenage brother, and he shared the same reaction after completing the book. He has recommended the book to his friends and teachers. He reported to me that his high school academic council is considering adopting the book as a part of next year's elective reading list. Order the book for yourself or a teen in your life. You won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh New Style, October 11, 2003

Welcome to the real world! This book is perfect for readers looking to capture a sense of what our students experience during a typical year of high school. If your tired of the typical Brady Bunch moral lessons, take the time to read this book. It presents the real problems and situations that teens encounter. Times have changed, but unfortunately writing styles seem to be progressing at a much slower pace. Tate Thompson exhibits an amazing ability to identify with teens and their struggles. I highly recommend this book. Hopefully Mr. Thompson is working on a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Unique, January 30, 2004
By
bookguy (Greensboro, North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Senioritis (Paperback)
When I picked up Senioritis, I had low expectations. I had never heard of Tate Thompson and the book sounded like a Breakfast Club ripoff. Man was I wrong. Every character in this book brings a new vibrant voice to the page, and it never gets boring. Nakeisha's attitude is so real and Alex's disorder is so dead on. Some of the characters are stereotypical, but they are done so right on that I could not put this book down. The situations are believable and the language of the characters is a testament to this author's great ear for language. This author turned my low expectations into the best reading experience I have had in a long time. I don't read teen books often, but I have been disappointed with more than a few of them. This book does not disappoint. If you want to read a book that represents the youth of today, then this is the truest representation since Catcher in the Rye. Senioritis makes Catcher in the Rye look like ancient history, and it kind of is by now. If Salinger's book is a classic, Thompson's book is a soon to be classic novel. Unbelievable.
