Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Combining a striking design and impressively precise audio reproduction with a wide frequency response, the Sennheiser MX 980 in-ear headphones features exquisite metal-crafted stainless design elements.

Sennheiser MX 980

The jack plug rotates for use as a straight or 90 degree headphone plug. The ergonomic shape channels cable away from the ear for comfort and stability. The included in-flight adapter allows you to tap into the latest movie with the same headphone, and switch back to your MP3 player or mobile with ease. When your MP3 player is out of reach, the in-line volume adjuster provides you with the control you demand.

I've just got this earbud yesterday,
I'm just a regular listener (using iPod and Sansa Clip+ with 320kbps or FLAC), so I don't think i can say much about sound details.

However, I'm sure that any non-audiophile will hear the differences between their normal headphones and this one (I have AKG K420, iFrogz CS40s, and very cheap sony MDR-E818). I heard more details I've never heard before from the same songs, and I felt that some instruments were further away from my head (it's just feel a bit more 3D to me).
I also noticed some differences between low and high quality files while using this earbud--normal people might've already been able to do this with normal headphones, but my ears is not that good.

The only thing that bothers me is the size of the earbud, it's larger than normal earbuds (e.g. the Apple white earbud). I'm not sure if I have small ears or not, but the earbud doesn't fit me very well and fell out of my ears easily. The fit is very crucial when using earbuds, the sound can be different if it doesn't fit well. So just make sure you try this thing before you buy it.
Also, the sound is much better when I put the foam ear pads on. So the earbud will be even bigger and you should take that into account when buying the MX980.

I would have given 5 stars if the earbud fits my ears nicely (it would be perfect).

I'll keep MX980 with me and use it on regular basis even though the size is a bit too big for my ears...
just because the sound is soo good :D

I just received these headphones today and I've been listening to them for a couple of hours and I've been surprised at how well they sound. Most of the high quality earbuds are the type that go into your ear so quality earbuds that sit on the outside are not as common. I'm one of those types that can't use the earbuds that go into your ear, they just drive me nuts. They are all uncomfortable, so when I wanted some high quality earbuds I looked at these.

For reference, I have a set of Monster Beats and a set of Audio Technica ATH-AD900 headphones. So I'm no stranger to good quality headphones. I'm not an audiophile though, I don't have a dedicated amp to increase the sound quality. I listen to all of these headphones straight out of an iPod.

I won't get into the esoteric minutiae that audiophiles like to engage in when describing the sound of headphones but I will say that they sound very good and they have a very open sound, i.e. you don't get that "stuck in your head" sound that cheaper headphones create.

The build quality is also very good with the exception of the sound level that is made of plastic and the end plug. The end plug is made of metal but it doesn't appear to be gold plated the way most quality headphones are. It probably doesn't mean much but at this price it should be included.

The way the plug bends from straight to L is also gimmicky. They should have just made it smaller instead of adding this useless feature.

I would have given this 4 1/2 stars for the few mistakes in the build quality but overall, a solid purchase.

I received these as a gift, and was really excited to try them out. First things first, they are too big for my ears and you need the earbud covers. These earbuds are strangely poor without the black mesh. I have Grados, B&W P5s, Sennheiser PX100s and several others and I was loomking for an earbud that would sound like over ear headphones but not a canalphone. I was completely disappointed by the Etymotic hf2s and am never dealing with canalphones again. For a few weeks, I struggled with the mediocre sound created by the poor fit, and I was ready to give these up. Someone recommended Yurbuds on a forum and those dis the trick. They are surgical grade silicon that customizes the fit of an earbud. After I had the yurbud installed (over the mesh), I could not believe the sound that these are capable of reproducing. I have had several WOW moments when hearing old songs.
NB: if you have poor source quality, these will exacerbate flaws.

Sound quality is a 6, but I have had bad luck with Sennheiser and fitting with several models. I would recommend these to anyone.
