The new G3 sennheiser mics have a diversity receiver inside the on camera unit. Looking at it you might wonder "how - there is only one antenna!" - they use the shield of the output signal connector as a second (diversity) antenna. This is a big first for sennheiser (azden did it in their 100 series system but that was 700 mhz)

As such the performance is mildly better than the G2, but what is more important is finding a free channel since we no longer have 700-800 mhz free to use with it being "given" to public safety and all wireless mics being taken away

You have 2 viable options here:

Sennheiser has a website - give them your venue zipcode and they will present the nearest and farthest TV channels. Alternately you can let the hardware scan for a vacant channel (with 42 Mhz available it will probably find one).

The fcc recognized the need for wireless mics to have white space and guaranteed in any geographic area one 6 mhz block of white space would be available. Before purchasing - go to [...] and check your typical venues for unused channels - you may want the A version instead of the B version of this product, which is what I had custom ordered.

It works in the san francisco bay area, so it will likely work in other congested cities. I've used my system in NYC without a problem of interferance as well.

As for audio, you have all the options in the world open to you - with a 1000:1 input attenuator in 4 steps, plus a 48 dB output attenuator you can go in on mic level and out on line level, or vice versa. With the onboard dc/dc converter designed for 2.4 V operation it will use the sanyo 2700 mah batteries and run for 11-12 hours Sanyo 2,700 mAh AA NiMH Rechargeable Batteries (4-Pack). With alkaline or eneloop expect 8 hours use. Due to the diversity receiver, its batteries die first so having 2 extra in your pocket will give you the option to swapout mid performance if need be.

This is professional gear and is compatible with G2 and G1 (turn off pilot tone) sennheiser mics. Expect professional results

I bought this wireless lav mic rig to replace a $200 consumer rig.
What a difference.
It takes a lot to impress me and this lav mic kit is impressive.
It's expensive but when you use it you see why.
The key difference between this unit and cheaper ones,,, this uses UHF. Cheaper ones use VHF and have lots of interference / less range.
I highly recommend this if you can afford it.
Operation is a bit more complicated so you'll have to sit down with the manual for a few minutes.
