Full headsets with microphone and remote are the way to go.
V-Moda, Klipsch, AKG and now Sennheiser have come up with decent products but this is the only one at a decent price.
The design is the best accomplishment.
Size, positioning of the mic, isolation and the rotating earcups combine the features that will please the average commuter. The supra-aural cups are the perfect size to isolate the noise of your commuter ride and prevent leakage to your fellow riders. The mic is positioned exactly at mouths-length on the one-sided cord. No need to dig into your jacket for the mic as with the Y-cords. Which is the reason why you want the mic on the cord in the first place: to answer the call promptly and easily. The earcups rotate flat should you need to rest your headset on your chest rather than strangle your neck (similar to the Klipsch design). The cable is light, although this maybe a weakness to some.
All in a clean, modern look.
Kudos to those drawing boards in Germany.
Clearly, a well thought-out headset!
The materials are cheap, hence the cheap price.
The designers, however, must be flabbergasted at the materials used in actual production. As mentioned before, the cable is very light even flimsy. It attaches to a straight 3.5" jack and this combination is usually the Achilles heel of most headphones. I prefer a 90-degree jack. The earcups are made of a light plastic that reminds of the infamously-fragile Bose Tripods. The p-leather earcup cushioning provide good isolation but no breathing to your ears (p-leather is plastic after all). Ears can get very hot (even in this cold winter) so not looking forward to using these cans in the summer.Read more ›
However, the biggest problem with them isn't the sound, but the design and construction.
The first time I tried them I noticed that the material for the earpads was kind of squeaky. I attributed this to the headphones being brand new, and proceeded to a 2+ month breaking-in period, using them on an almost daily basis.
What I have found is that the squeakiness has not gone away. Every time I move my head, even a tiny fraction of an inch, will result in a slight shift of the headphones and a squeak as it slightly rubs against my ear. It is quite loud, only the loudest music at the highest volume can cover it up (which, of course, is not recommended for healthy ears). If the slightest movement causes it to squeak, imagine what it is like when walking or exercising (say, on a treadmill or exercise bike).
Part of may to do with the other problem: these headphones do not stay on you head very well. Sudden movements like turning your head will shift them, sometimes off of your ear. This probably is a contributor to the squeakiness problem, but by no means is it the cause.
As we all know, very few people sit perfectly still when listening to music on headphones. Regretfully, that is exactly what you have to do to enjoy the sound, and to keep them on your head!
Based on the quality of sound, I would recommend other Sennheiser products, possibly ear buds and over-the-ear instead of on-ear headphones.
Thanks for your review. I have not heard of this "squeaking" and would love if you could send them to us for verification. Even after continuous usage i didnt feel that i am wearing this on my head.
Sound clarity is good. The sound output (bass) is not so great but this is one of the advantage of using this headphone. Your ear will never feel the burden at all.
I also tried using this headphone for my nexus 5 and i don't find any issues with it. It works perfect.
The ear buds are soft and not pressing your ears hard and that adds to the comfort that this headphone provides.
To conclude, this is best for those who listens to music for a long time and who is really not bothered about bass.
We were expecting the 218i to have similar audio performance to the 219s, but sadly they really fell short. In particular, the bass response of the headphones was very weak unless the ear pieces were pressed against the ear with moderate pressure. This is due to the 'sealed' design of the 218/218i which also needs a seal between the ear pads and the ears - something that these headphones couldn't do well based on the size/shape and the weight. As a result, the only way to get good sounds was to use your hands to press the ear pads against your ears, something we both deemed unacceptable.
We ended up returning these headphones, disappointed because we love the sound of Sennheiser headphones in general (we own a total of 4 Sennheiser headphones that we love).
