I was specifically looking for a more "open" stereo headset to use with my iPhone in my office. By open I mean I was deliberately avoiding in-ear and around-ear headphones, because I needed to be able to hear my surroundings rather than be isolated from them. (I think too many negative reviews come from reviewers that don't understand how these, by design, do *not* block outside noise.) And by headset, I mean stereo headphones + mic + 3-button-remote for full iPhone control. This is the "understanding" part of my review title.

This makes for a very small number of headphones to choose from:
- these, Sennheiser HD 238i Mid-Sized Headset with Detailed Sound Reproduction - Black
- a similar Sennheiser product, Sennheiser PX 100-II i Light Weight Supra-Aural Headset with 3 Button Control for i-Pod,i-Phone and i-Pad (Black)
- Bose OE2i Audio Headphones - Black
- Bowers & Wilkins P5 Mobile HiFi Stereo Headphones
I didn't need the PX-100-ii's portability. I've suffered enough Bose products to know I detest them. The P5's are too rich for my blood. So that leaves these, the HD 238i.

First, they are decently built. For headphones in this price range, the materials are good and the build is tight. Perhaps the cable could be a tad thicker, but negative reviews on this are definitely overblown.

I finally got these headphones about months of research and debate. When I saw them for $50 on Amazon, I jumped the gun and had them within 3 days (I love you Prime)

I let the headphones burn for a few hours before I put them on. At low-medium levels, the quality was so crisp and clear I actually got the chills. I've owned several Klipsch, Sennheisers, and Shure headphones/earphones and this one is by far the best. It's comfortable, even for long periods of time, very light and sound amaaaazing. As others noted, the best features of these are the mids and highs, and although the lows are present, they're not thumping (which is what I prefer anyway).

Some users complain about the open aire design feature. I understand the sound leaks through and there's no noise cancellation, but again, this is a feature! Those complaining about these things didn't know what they were getting in the first place. Yes, the sound leaks through at medium/high levels and others will hear it if they're around. Yes, there is no noise cancellation because its open aire design. Yes, that's what makes these headphones sound so amazing.

Overall, I would highly recommend these headphones to anyone who enjoys great quality, sound, and a bargain.

I have been through two of these headphones and one of the HD 238s (similar, but without the mic/remote), using them with an iPod Touch and an iPhone. In each case, after several months, the sound started to drop out when the cord was moved. They have a very thin cord and it's clear to me that it just isn't up to being used with a mobile device on a daily basis.

Sennheiser will replace them if they are still in warranty, but it takes a long time and to me it just isn't worth the trouble.

It's too bad, because they are quite comfortable, have good sound (if a little bassy), and a decent mic/remote.

I've owned a couple pairs of Sennheiser headphones:
PX100, PMX100, HD485, HD280 Pro and HD595.

I was expecting the quality of these to be around the PX100 level in terms of sound and comfort and was pleasantly surprised!
They're better by a landslide! They sound very nice, very detailed with a nice sound stage.
I really enjoy listening to music on them and find myself marveling at the nuances they manage to reproduce.
These are colored - so open and a bit loose on the bass is how I would describe their sound.

In terms of comfort - you can walk around with these for hours! They do warm your ears up due to their on ear design, but they cause no pressure and no discomfort at all.

In terms of the chord length and the complaints about the flimsy trs connection.
I have no idea what people are complaining about.
The chord length is perfect for putting a player in your pant pocket or your backpack with some slack to play around with.
The connection is quite solid and better then previous models of the same price.

They volume switches worked perfectly on my iPod.
The only comment I do have is that they are a bit hard to drive (which is clearly written in the specs), so my Galaxy at full volume still doesn't push much sound through them - the iPod does a better job though.

Highly recommended.
