5.0 out of 5 stars Sennheiser HD 465 a very good buy
I am amazed how badly another reviewer has rated this product. Last month (May 2006) I had a chance to review a number of headphones at a store in Hungary. I listened to a number of Sennheisers, AKG and other brands for a good 30 minutes. The Sennheiser HD 465 gave me the best price for quality comparison. There was one or two more expensive Sennheisers at the store, but...

These headphones sound awful. There is all sorts of hype on the packaging about how they contain the latest technology - they even tout that the headphone lead uses oxygen free copper! What a con. All the other bad reviews are correct in saying that these headphones are low grade boom boxes with a muffled midband and virtually no treble. Give them a good listen before you...

There was one or two more expensive Sennheisers at the store, but I did not appreciate the difference in sound quality. Coming back to the US I looked at my Amazon account and found this headphone to be a good 20 to 25 dollars cheaper than it was overseas (no surprise there). I ordered it and has arrived. I can tell that this headphone is extremely well balanced for sound image, the base is not overwhelming at all how the other reviewer was claiming and it is very comfortable to wear. Overall it gives a pleasurable listening experience unlike many other headphones I had listened to. I also have a Sennheiser HD-202 which is a low end model and owned a KOSS many years ago. I was looking for not an overly expensive model that can satisfy me and I can tell without hesitation that this headphone does just that.

I just got these a couple of days ago. Since there were no reviews available, I decided to offer up quick first impressions:

Construction
light enough weight and solid (if plasticy) construction
very comfortable fit so far. Should be easy to enjoy long listening sessions.
the cable enters one side only and is detachable from the base of the headphone. cable is 10ft but can't be shortened w/o buying a separate shorter replacement cable.

Sound
At first, I thought these sounded very bass heavy. I should say most of my portable listening has been done on basic sony earbuds that may have been lacking altogether in any bass.
I have been burning the headphones in with a variety of CDs and either I'm getting more used to the sound or the bass is being tamed (if possible). so my reaction has certainly warmed progressively since first putting them on
overall, the sound is immersive, and definitely makes you want to shut out what's going on around you and just listen to the music. this for me means the potential is there for an even better soundstage and listening experience after i get a bunch more hours of play time though the phones. (only at about 40 or so now.)

I'll update this in a couple of weeks

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice - other reviews are accurate, November 9, 2006
This review is from: Sennheiser HD 465 Supra-Aural Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
Yes - these produce very VERY low lows. However, I have found the mids and highs to be adequate.

There was one review that spoke about what you are looking for primarily - I believe that applies a great deal here. I do agree that they are indeed very good in terms of bass and also I find that the mids and highs to be good as well.

If you have the option to listen to them before you buy - do that and utilize various genres while you are listening.

If you are NOT bass person or one who can appreciate or at the very least handle bass - then don't go for them. Other than that - GET THEM!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Headphones, July 3, 2006
This review is from: Sennheiser HD 465 Supra-Aural Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
I like another reviewer thought the headphones very bass heavy, but for some reason after an hour they changed to a balance set of phones, the best I've had so far, don't be put off by the other reviews they just need to burnt in - what a sound, still with very good bass response but more balanced all round sound stage. A must for rock or pop music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value, December 16, 2007

I just returned bose on ear headphones for these and saved myself over $150. Comparable sound. Better build quality...(a little bulky though). Super bass wihtout sacrificing any highs as mentioned elsewhere. I just love them!

To much bass but then I changed the ear cups so they would not be flat against my ears and now they are 95% better and they look really nice to. I like them very much. Also they don't feel to tight on me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value - Re-discovering music, October 21, 2005
This review is from: Sennheiser HD 465 Supra-Aural Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
Having owned Sennheiser HP's some years ago I wanted to get an updated pair.

I bought these headphones to give my kids quiet while they did their homework and find myself using them all the time now (I work from home).

I have re-discovered a lot of music I used to skip over due to the spatial quality and bass clarity of these headphones.

A great buy and thoroughly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Warm bass with no mid tone precence, August 19, 2006
This review is from: Sennheiser HD 465 Supra-Aural Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
If you like your music to be warm, with no mid range sound stage, cushioned and over emphasised bass then these are for you. Also these HD 465s have a fabric tensioned over the cup which squashes your ear (rather than surround it) and lets ambient sound enter. I returned my HD 465 after receiving them as a gift and went to the HD 555.

My opinion is that the HD 485 has similar sound with a better cup ( no fabric tensioned), but the best option is the HD 555 for Au$85 extra.

The Sennheiser HD 555 has a large plug jack designed for the lounge amplifier rather than an iPod, so to use it on an ipod you have to plug the large jack into the adapter and end up with a double plug the same height as your iPod again.

Another good thing about the HD555 is they are very comfortable over hours of listening, have a sleek look which is in contrast to the 80's design of the HD465/485s.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Sennheiser, By Far, February 4, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sennheiser HD 465 Supra-Aural Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
This is the fourth or fifth Sennheiser earphones I have purchased, and the very first that did not please me. In fact, it might well be the worst pair of stereo phones I have ever encountered. The highs are nonexistant, and the lows are so heavy, the sound actually breaks up on truly low tones. No amount of correction could compensate, either. I know. I tried. The attenuation of the high frequencies actually starts at 800 Hertz. I am truly disppointed, and had I less confidence in this company, (previously), I might have retained the packaging, etc., and returned the phones.
As it is, I am stuck with them. Somebody suggested they might "break in." If so, I will play music into them endlessly, but certainly without listening. It's that painful.
