Recently picked these up, having owned the MX660, then the MX760 for several years. The MX471 model is marketed for women, I guess based on the fancier maroon body. It comes with a nice maroon drawstring pouch, rubber rings and foam covers. Sound quality is better with the foam covers than the rubber rings -- it covers the ear canal better. The nicest thing, physically, about these phones is the cable. FINALLY a cable that is flexible, but not sticky and tangly! (This is only on the MX471/581 "Women" models, not the MX470/580 black models.)

The MX471 has a warm sound signature, meaning good bass (not the fastest or punchiest, but certainly not boomy and sloppy ke the CX-300), smooth and decently extended highs (a bit rolled off, but sufficently balanced with the bass -- doesn't get harsh with EQ boost in the 8K range), and expressive mids that are warm, not cold and clinical. These are a bit warmer and less efficient than the MX760. The MX580/1 might be a closer comparison to the MX760.

I have had MX470 for a month now, so my review will be based on the comparison between MX470 and MX471.

1 471 has better wires, at least one class higher than 470's. They appear to be very durable, and create no micro-phobics at all.
2 The housing of 417 is rounder and bigger, but the size of its driver covering is actually smaller than 470.
3 471 only comes with one pair of rubber earphone sleeves. 470 had an additional bigger pair (although I had no use of it).
4 Two pairs of ear foams are included.
5 One dard red (matching 471's housing color) pouch is included in the package. 470 came with a black one instead.
6 Color and pattern printed on the housing are not as bright as shown in stock pictures. Although it is "designed for ladies", it can be defined as a unisex product.
7 Cable length of 471 seems to be equal to that of 470.
8 471 is built with a better Y splitter, stronger and easier to use than 470. The separator has model number printed, while 470 has a smaller one without model number.

1 471's sound quality is every bit as good as 470. Both of them clearly surpass my veteran MX400/500.
2 Because I also have MX560/660 at home for portable use, I think I like the sound signature of new models better.
3 Although no significant difference can be heard between 470 and 471, 471 is very slightly darker. This could be because it is positioned deeper in my ears due to its smaller driver coverings.
4 Both 470 and 471 is very comfortable. But personally, I prefer 470 over 471. I tried both with their slim rubber sleeves and foams on.

Looking at the current Sennheiser consumer grade earphone product line, it appears to me that MX580/581 are just MX470/471 with built-in volume control.

It's very hard to find headphones that are Stylish, Sturdy and Efficient but from what I have experienced so far this pair holds all three attributes. I had the legendary CX-300, although I hate in-ear headphones, which are awesome if YOU are a Bass-Head. Coming from CX-300 headphones I do feel like missing some BASS but those are in-ear and gave me headache after two hours of listening at high volume, if You haven't own those then these will have enough BASS for YOU. Highs and Mids are perfect.

Build Quality is superb, the wires are thick and buds are stylish and comfortable. I broke the CX-300's wire after two months of use as it's very fragile compare to these. MX-471 came with a pair of rubber, and two pairs of foam covers. These are meant for small ears but I think they will fit a normal size ear just fine, just snap-on the rubber coating, put the e foam on (which will improve the BASS)and you will be good to go. A nice little pouch is included in the package that you can see in the picture, which I don't use but maybe it will be useful for you. The listening experience depends on fit, size, sensitivity of your ear, input source, personal values of highs and lows therefore Your mileage may vary.

Overall this pair gives an extraordinary appearance, satisfactory comfort and admirable listening experience. For $17 dollars I don't think I will be able to find a better pair than this.

First of all, I'm a little ticked off that I bought these not 2 days ago for $18, and the price just suddenly dropped now. Oh well.

I was looking for a pair of earphones for my zen x-fi that weren't in the ear canal, because those bother my ears. At first I got the sony Mdr-E10, but I did not like the sound at all. So I got the MX 471. Out of the box, they look good. I like the wire which looks better than the regular cheap plasticky stuff, and doesn't tangle as much. The earbuds' small size fits nicely in my ear, and they come with rubber sleeves to make them bigger for bigger ears, and 2 sets of foam covers. They also have a really cool looking pouch, supposedly for a nano ipod, but which my zen fits in with the earphones perfectly.

I'm by no means an audio expert. I've owned a few cheap earphones and my old ipod apple earphones. I do know what good sound sounds like though. I listen mostly to classical, opera, rock, alternative, and bunch of other stuff. I was a little surprised with the sound at first, the tones were all sharper than what I'm used to, and I was hearing a lot of things that I never heard before on my music, which was interesting. I'm still getting used to hearing the treble so distinctly in my music from earphones, a totally different listening experience.

The bass is actually really good. Very clean and sharp. For the price, I'd say these are a steal. Great sound, great quality, comfortable to wear, and for a good price.

Edit: (07/12/2011) Changed to 4*. Less than a year later, I'm finding that the connector part of the earphones is not working well. I lose sound often, and have to twist it around to find some position where the sound reappears. I believe there's a 2 year warranty on these earphones but unfortunately I'm not in the states to be able to get them replaced.
