5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound - same as the MX-500, but without volume control
I just got a couple of these for my two daughters. They have the same sound as the MX-500. Considering that the cord is only 3 ft. long, and just about anything you hook it up to is likely to have a volume control, a volume control on the cord is pretty redundant.

In fact, the other day, I had the MX-500s plugged in for a long time, and then forgot that...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sound Good, Foam Covers Too Loose
These earbuds sound good, much better than the stock earbuds that came with my mp3 player. They are also more compact than the over-the-ear headphones. But the foam covers are just too loose. Within one day I lost the cover for one ear. And the foam cover for the other ear keeps wanting to come off. If I pull these out of my pocket, the foam cover often stays in my...

This review is from: Sennheiser MX400 In-Ear Headphone with Carrying Case (Electronics)
I just got a couple of these for my two daughters. They have the same sound as the MX-500. Considering that the cord is only 3 ft. long, and just about anything you hook it up to is likely to have a volume control, a volume control on the cord is pretty redundant.

In fact, the other day, I had the MX-500s plugged in for a long time, and then forgot that there was a volume switch in the cord. As the day wore on, I couldn't quite figure why the sound volume was dropping. It was only later that I realized that the volume switch had accidentally gotten bumped down.

So save a buck or two and get the MX-400 instead of the MX-500s.

I've already reviewed the MX-500 earbuds - I'll just repeat a few points about the MX-400, since these are the same earbuds: If you are a Sennheiser fan, these earbuds have that classic Sennheiser sound - a rich, ringing clarity in the mids and highs, and no excessive bass boost. Like all non-sealing earbuds, the bass is variable and gets louder the more tightly the earbuds are coupled against the earholes. How tightly you get them to fit depends on your ear anatomy really.

As for getting them to stay in place, I discovered that the best way was to wear them upside down and loop the wires around the back of my ears and under my chin.

An alternative way to wear these earplugs, much more discrete, but also a bit less secure, is to loop the wires over the ears and around the back of your neck, like sunglass straps. A small paper clip to the back of your collar will hold the wires in place and you can run the cord around inside your shirt.

These in-ear headphones have really impressed me, having been introduced to these type of headphones with the set that came with my Apple Ipod. The Sennheiser ear-buds give a very rich, satisfying sound that I find better than that of the Apple ear buds, especially in terms of a full bass sound -- nothing at all tinny with these. They are not only more comfortable that the set that comes with the Ipod, but not nearly as likely to get tangled up, a major hassle with the Apple model. This definitely is a good set of headphones to own -- I now use them fulltime with my Ipod, keeping the Apple set as a spare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent In-ear headphones, March 3, 2001

These in-ear headphones are excellent. They're not quite as stylish as Bang and Olufsen's but I think the sound quality is as good and they also appear to handle bass a lot better at high output. The price is also a LOT more attractive than B&O's.

I would recommend these to anyone that want to use in-ear headphones with portable equipment. They're great.

The sound is pretty good for small in-ear headphones as these, certainly better than other brands I've tried, and the price is good too. The only slight irritation is that the foams fall off quite easily.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good inexpensive buds, February 2, 2006

I picked up a couple of pairs of these earbuds for use with my Zen mp3 player. After listening for a couple of weeks, I'm quite impressed. They have a much more detailed sound than any of the other earbuds I've tried under $30, and even rival my Etymotics in their midrange clarity. I can understand lyrics that I never understood before on songs that I've literally listened to hundreds of times. They're quite comfortable in my ears as well.

Downsides include a short cord (would be perfect if it was about 6 in longer) -- as is, I can't keep the player in my pants' pocket while listening. The foam covers also don't want to stay on very well.

Overall, a very nice set of earbuds at an unbelievable price.

These are great replacements for the ipod's white ear buds. The ipod's packed in buds were too big for my ears and hurt so much when I would listen to my ipod. The MX-400's are smaller and sound a lot better and are more comfortable. As other reviews stated these have more bass than the packed in ipod ear buds. They are great and you can't beat that price-$14! The case is convenient too, you can roll up your ear buds from the bottom swivel mechanism. Great Buy you won't regret.

The sound is well-balanced and very smooth. In fact, I couldn't really improve the sound using the iTunes equalizer -- it's just fine with the equalizer set to "flat". At a very low volume level, I did use a slight bass boost which is normal procedure for most any headphones or speakers. These earbuds come with a handy case, and are remarkably good and very easy to listen with. They've got a permanent home in my travel kit.

A true Audiophile may find fault with these based on Sennheiser's reputation for Absolute Sound (sic)..

But the fact of the matter is that for only a few bucks, these headphones make the cheesy CD player I have in my cubicle SOUND GREAT! Even, balanced sound from top to bottom, and they accurately reproduce bass tones at LOW volumes. They're efficient, so I can keep the volume down and still enjoy excellent sound. They're clean enough that I can listen for an extended amount of time without fatigue. And the bonus is that I can clearly hear things with these which my CD player's original headphones never even hinted at.

Yah: They're earbuds, so they're sensitive to placement in the ear, and will never sound as good as a high end over the ear headset. But these are obviously intended to be sold as a replacement for the OEM drekk that electronics ship with, and towards that end they are absolutely great. And considering the few bucks spent, they are WONDERFUL.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply works!, January 12, 2005

This review is from: Sennheiser MX400 In-Ear Headphone with Carrying Case (Electronics)
Fairly comfortable (I find most earbuds and in-ear 'phones difficult to take) with almost no noise isolation (you'll hear everything around you). The little foam covers come popping off and are easily lost. The little case is EXCELLENT and makes transporting these safely easy. Overally, inexpensive, fairly good sounding, just the thing to carry in the computer bag...

Within one day I lost the cover for one ear. And the foam cover for the other ear keeps wanting to come off. If I pull these out of my pocket, the foam cover often stays in my pocket. I'm certain I will lose the cover on the other ear pretty soon. Now I need to find replacement foam covers.
