Wow, I have been waiting literally years for a quality set of wireless headphones. I listened to many including the previous generation of Sennheiser's. All of them had some low level of hiss and less than audiophile sound quality. The wait is over. These cans utilize Kleer technology and an open design. I always preferred open headphones for the more natural bass response and to my 50 year old ears these sound great. The headphones are comfortable though I would like a bit more padding spanning the entire headband. The buttons on the headphones that control power, volume and balance (handy if you have asymmetrical hearing deficits) are too small and flat but I can now control the volume without removing the headphones. The range is listed as being up to 100 meters and practically speaking, as I can walk on either floor of my house and even outside in my yard without any noticeable effect. Every 30-40 minutes I may get a brief 1 second or so loss of sound but it is infrequent enough to not bother me. Expensive and surely not equivalent sound to an equally or more expensive pair of cans but they are very close in terms of sound and the wireless performance makes them the real deal, totally worth it.

Verified Purchase
I bought and returned two other pairs of wireless headphones in the sub-$200 price range before springing for these, and simply put they are worth the extra money. There's no interference, the sound quality is excellent throughout the range (bass, mids, highs) and the hiss that plagues most other wireless headphones doesn't exist. Range is also excellent. The only thing to note is that the base station does not have optical audio input, only a standard 1/8th jack.

I have used the Sennheiser RS-130 for the past 4 years, and the surround sound was incredible and delicious, but I was looking for an upgrade, the next generation from a high quality manufacturer. My main uses are for blu-ray movies and late night TV viewing as to not disturb any neighbors, plus it's an intimate experience without any street noise. When I decided on the RS-180 I bought it from J & R because their customer service is outstanding. The DVD product guide estimated an initial charge of up to 16 hours, but mine was ready for blastoff in about 7. I was immediately blown away, swept into a cinematic oasis, a sound panorama that disintegrated any assumptions about how a movie should leave a lasting impression! They are exceptionally comfortable and well worth the price, and you will not be disappointed!!! Without a sound system hooked up to my Samsung 1920 X 1080 HD-LCD TV, I realize now I haven't totally appreciated the blu-ray player and movies until this wireless headphone purchase. Thanks to Kleer's uncompressed audio transmission technology another journey began via listening to some of my favorite blu-rays like Oliver Stones "The Doors". WOW!!! The bass sounds are outstanding and precise. You will venture forth into a new world of audio pleasure. If the Sennheiser RS-180 was a painting it would be a masterpiece by Kandinsky or Dali; a sculpture, La Pieta via Michelangelo, a song, something by Lennon & McCartney. Remember this: escape is not a luxury, it is a necessity if you want to get an advanced degree in sound and mind travel. Now get out and buy these phones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I've got all these. The RS 160, 170 and 180 's along with the ear buds, MX W1 .

THE HEADSETS:

They all work well together or separately. Most importantly, when pairing them to the same base and adjust the volume on one headset, the volume will change on ALL the units with the exception of the RS-160 's. They'll work independently and are likely the best choice for adding additional pairs.

Not much to say about the MX-W1's. They're portable and that's it. They don't compare to the headsets. They do sound clear. The highs sound good, but there's a noticeable lack of bass.

The 180's sound the nicest over-all for all material. They're also VENTED so your ears won't sweat during long usage or in a hot house. They also give the best airiness/surround sound when paired to the 170's base. They're also the most comfortable for long sessions. I never knew it, but your ears do get "tired". Additionally, these provide the least privacy. Not that they're loud, just that they can be heard clearly on it's highest volume with someone a couple feet away and still notable in the next room.. For normal TV usage, it really shouldn't be a problem, but music or a good movie could depending on your situation.

The 160's and 170's sound EXACTLY the same and are the best for music, especially bottom heavy material. They're CLOSED units and are best when you need privacy... I.E. bedrooms, late-night. These are my fav's except in late summer.... lol, you take them off and get instant relief..... you didn't really notice how hot your ears were till you take them off. On the upside, they make really good ear muffs in the winter!

THE RECEPTION:

First and foremost, these do NOT work well through walls when compared to the RS-130's.

Having previously owned the earlier RS 160, I knew the quality of these "cans." The RS 160 didn't have enough RANGE to cover my home, and wanted the increased range and AGC (automatic gain control) to tame loud passages. I am THRILLED with the new RS 180! It covers my whole home and out into the yard for a little distance. You'll never get the rated 100 metre range unless the transmitter and receiver are both outside and in the clear, but the range of this pair is very adequate!

Only complaint I had was that the control buttons are FLAT on the edge of the right earphone. THAT WAS EASILY SOLVED by mixing up a small batch of acrylic polymer resin, and applying ONE DROP to the volume + and volume - buttons. After it dried in about an hour, it left those buttons with a raised "bump" that my fingers can easily find. The on/off/standby button is between the volume buttons, so it is now easy to find with my fingers also. With this easy modification, I give this headset a solid 5 STARS. Too bad Sennheiser didn't do this at the factory, but it is very easy to do at home

The sound of this headset is outstanding. It fits comfortably on the ears for hours of use without discomfort. The AGC works VERY WELL indeed. The two AAA NiMh rechargable batteries will run the cans for 24 hours, and all I have to do to recharge them is to "hang" the headset on the transmitter. Nothing to plug in. When, in time, the batteries are exhausted, I can simply purchase replacements at the grocery store and change them out in less than a minute.

I was SO PLEASED with the RS 180, that I purchased a second pair to carry with me to field locations.
