After using the RS180s for several years, i was thrilled to pick up the RS 220s as their suitable replacement. As soon as they became available, i ordered them and waited patiently for them to arrive.

To keep this short and simple, the early models of the RS220s came with a large number of flaws, the main one being constant signal loss even on a full charge, regardless of the distance of the receiver, and connection. I will be Warrantying these to Sennheiser at my earliest convenience in hopes that this will be corrected and will write a follow-up review at that time. As it stands, huge disappointment as a longtime Sennheiser supporter. At least they're comfortable.

*Follow Up Edit- I ordered a replacement set of the 220s and just got them today in hopes that my issues would be resolved, but they are going as strong as they always have been. I've come to the decision that it's likely they're not functioning properly due to being in an apartment building. So there's a friendly red flag for anyone considering buying these. If you live in a complex of any form, i recommend steering towards the 180s as opposed to the 220s.

*Another Follow Up Edit- It appears any interference at all will disrupt the sound signal of the RS220s. I've brought them to work to use at my desk under the assumption they would work better in an environment with minimal wireless signals, however even in an enclosed environment... The signal is garbage. Dropping the rating to a 1/5 stars. Sennheiser also refuses to acknowledge a problem in the slightest regarding the RS220s due to "receiving a number of positive reviews" and will not accept any responsibility for the poor design. Would not recommend the RS220's to anyone.

I'm leaving my formerly positive the review below for posterity.

After about a week of using these, I will be returning them immediately. I just tried listening to music with the headphones in a fairly uncluttered room, with very little other electrical equipment in the room or nearby. Putting the transmitter in every conceivable place in the room, even holding the transmitter in my hand less than three inches from my face, the headphones were still cutting out several times per second (and, yes, on a full charge). They have been highly inconsistent in the same environment all throughout the past week. This is beyond unacceptable.

I love these headphones! I spent some time after I first got them going over my favorite songs and pieces and found them to be very versatile. I can fall in love with my music library all over again. The ear pads are soft and breathe well, and the weight on the head is noticeable (good) without being fatiguing (bad). They also allow me to take full advantage of my machine's optical output without a separate amplifier.

Some notes:
-They are very leaky at high volumes. This is by design. If you're looking for privacy, look elsewhere.
-The controls on the cans themselves take some getting used to. For me, they didn't lend themselves well to intuition at first. (This is my sole reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5).
-When the the instructions say to charge the headset for 16 hours, THEY MEAN IT. Before I did this, they turned on just fine and played for a long time, but cut out frequently. IMO, this is probably what the other reviewers who had problems with cutting out were doing wrong. After a good charge, there were no problems whatsoever with dropping out within a reasonable distance.

I recently purchased these headphones from crutchfield and have subsequently returned them. For wireless headphones, these are truly remarkable and I have not heard any other wireless headphones that come close to their sound quality. However, contrary to what these headphones are advertised as, they are not a wireless version of the HD600s or the HD650s. I did find that the upper and lower frequencies were not as sufficiently presented compared to the aforementioned models and they did sound a little "thin". The soundstage was excellent with a definite sense of air between the different instruments. The frequency response of the RS220 is 16-22,000 Hz while the HD600s have a frequency response of 12 - 39,000 Hz. I own the HD598, HD600 and HD650 so I was able to compare these headphones to all three. I do believe that wireless technology has a long way to go before we can expect anything that sounds like their wired counterparts. They are still excellent if you do not mind parting with $600. That was the only reason I returned them as I felt that $600 was a bit too much for what they offered. To me, they seemed worth more like $250 to $300.

Hello - thanks for your comments and review. Note that the RS 220 also features a digital input array and "thru" mode, which does indeed add to manufacturing cost but exponentially assists in connection to hi-definition audio sources within a hi-fi stack.

I've got another set of RS-180 Sennheiser wireless headphones that I use at work which work amazingly well, so I sprung for this more expensive set for my home use. I'm literally about 2 feet from the receiver and I've been experiencing quite a few issues with the sound dropping out on me. I've also found that the headset will occasionally lose the analog signal on the base unit and show no lights for any of the types of signals passing through the base unit. I have to reach up and cycle the power on the base unit to regain sound.

The sound, when it comes through, is passable for what I'd expect from a wireless headset and I love the feel and weight of the headset on my head. I've had headphones that leave my ears hot, but I don't particularly notice that with these headphones.

If I didn't have so many problems with the sound cutting out, I'd actually enjoy this headset. I've had this headset for about a month and a half (hoping the sound problems will magically clear up...for some reason) but I'll probably be returning them soon.
