From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3?An unfortunate woman, caught in the depths of homelessness, seeks shelter on a nightly basis beside a warm, city deli. All seems irredeemably bleak that winter until two youngsters come to her aid, determined to lessen her plight. Their compassion not only helps them to become responsible members of their community but also fortifies their relationship with their mother, who ultimately speaks out on the woman's behalf. Appropriately somber illustrations rendered in oil add to the well-written presentation. This sensitive portrayal of homelessness is both educational and inspirational. A poignant selection that addresses the possibilities for compassion in society.?Selene S. Vasquez, Orange Brook Elementary School, FL

Review
"A modern morality tale that never strays too far from the stark reality of homelessness while portraying the generosity and concern of two children for a stranger. Written in direct, disarming prose." --
School Library Journal 10/97"A modern parable about reaching out to those who can find no room at the inn..this book is true to a child's predilections for helping the less fortunate and has a reasonableness about how much people can help the homeless better their lives. The art here, too, is very strong." --
Booklist 9/1/97"A touching story...a worthy collaboration that illuminates the realities of homeless life and offers no happy, pat conclusions." --
Publishers Weekly 9/8/97"Realistic and believable..For readers who witness homelessness every day, the book answers questions, carrying the message that even for large problems, small efforts can make a difference." --
