Editorial Reviews

Review

"I was excited to see a book that included 'Action' both in the title and content since this aspect of perception is usually missing ... I think this book will help to complete the picture of perception and action." Richard Wilkie, Lecturer in Perception, Action and Cognition, University of Leeds, UK "I thought the logical flow of ideas was one of the best aspects of this textbook. Fundamental concepts are introduced which allow the students to feel confident about the grounding of their knowledge ...The book is very readable and keeps one engaged ... and I think it will draw students into this area." Professor Alan Johnson, UCL division of Psychology and Language Sciences 'I found this to be a broad and interesting book, well worth investing in. As with all good textbooks this edition left me feeling that my knowledge had expanded; more importantly, it raised my appreciation of the subject and my awareness of further unanswered questions. It is a book I know I will enjoy reading again.' - Annabelle Redfern, School of Experimental Psychology, University of Bristol, Perception

Text book for an S&P class. Great class, but the text leaves something to be desired. I can't say it's a good teaching book, but it is a decent book. It certainly expresses the author's erudition on the subject. He could do well to remember he's writing to newbs on the subject. At any rate, the book is cheap. I still don't suggest getting it unless you want another perspective on the subject. If you're new to the material, you'll likely spend a lot of time in the library or buying other materials to compensate for the chasm left gaping in your understanding.

I still give it three stars since it does increase knowledge. You just have to spend much more time with this book than with others that may be a bit more accessible to the newbie.

This is an excellent book. The author's viewpoint, an "evolutionary perspective," gives valuable insights not found in other books on visual perception. I only wish that he could expand further the already excellent discussions on the real world instantiation and significance of the peculiarities (eg, illusion, change blindness, inattentional blindness) of the neuroscience.
