Book Description

February 6, 2006
The scientists featured here, including a number of Nobel Prize winners, work in fields ranging from chemistry and genetics to meteorology and anthropology. All of them are exploring profound ideas that have shaped the world. Filled with diagrams, photographs, educational experiments young readers perform themselves, and inspiring discussions on how to embark on a science career, Sensational Scientists is perfect for future scientists who want to probe the how and why of life.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 8-11. Readers won't want to read every profile in this wide-ranging collective biography, which introduces 24 groundbreaking and prizewinning contemporary scientists born or residing in Canada, but they will find many stories of interest. Shell interviewed each of the scientists, and the personal facts he gleaned add interest. The style is occasionally condescending ("It's nice to know that there are such things as black holes out there in the universe." Nice?), and, though serious students will welcome the attention to subjects seldom addressed in YA books, much of the math, physics, and molecular genetics may be too difficult for the average reader. Discussions of ecology, physical anthropology, and biology, however, will be accessible to a wider audience. Each chapter includes diagrams, quotes, photos, a discussion of the science , 0 a lab activity, a few additional references, and career advice ("So you want to be a physicist?"). An extensive glossary is appended. Hazel Rochman
