A fact filled, fun way to learn about the sense of hearing ...,
This review is from: The Sense of Hearing (New True Books) (Paperback)
If you love a challenge, you'll enjoy finding out which of two statements in the front of this book is true . . . the other one is a big fib. Hearing is one of the senses that guides us throughout the day. If you use an MP3 player for a large portion of the day, you might be blocking out some sounds that could be important to your safety. Other sounds give us much needed information that "connects [us] to the world'
There are many things you can learn about your sense of hearing. In this book you'll learn about different kinds of vibrations, scientific explanations of sound, how you actually hear, hearing loss and other unusual things you may not have been aware of. You'll learn about "hearing dogs" and how they "assist their owners by alerting them to important sounds around them." You'll also be able to take a look at the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet. There are even some oddball facts in this book. Did you know that octopuses can see quite well, but they have no way to hear anything? They are as deaf as a rock! The "True Book" series are bright, colorful and loaded with facts. In this book there are many snazzy, colorful photographs, a hearing time line, "important words, an index, additional recommended book, organization and web site resources. This is an easy and interesting read. Can you guess which animal is the loudest in the world? Mmmmm, it's not a mouse for sure!
