5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, February 8, 2009
This review is from: Sense and Nonsense in the Behavioral Treatment of Autism: It Has to Be Said (Paperback)
I recently received this book as a gift and I'm so glad that I did! The book discusses the scientific research done on the different methods of autism treatment. The authors provide very detailed explanations. They really stressed the importance of a program being tailored to the needs of the individual student.
The authors of this book really support the ABA method of teaching and there is a lot of discussion about ABA and the studies that have been done. They also give clear reasons why common "trends" in ASD treatment aren't always best. I would recommend this book to parents and educators of children on the autism spectrum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!, September 24, 2011
This book is for any parent or professional that has a child with autism in their lives. There are so many non-researched based interventions for children with autism. Please be skeptical when someone tries to "sell" you on a treatment or cure for autism (dolphin therapy, floortime, sunrise, vaccines cause autism, PBS). Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a data driven. ABA is a scientific (over 50 years of data) approach to the treatment of maladaptive and socially unacceptable behavior. Please skip the junk and give your child the tools he/she needs to live a successful life.

This review is from: Sense and Nonsense in the Behavioral Treatment of Autism: It Has to Be Said (Paperback)
If you have a child recently diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder then you know how confusing all the recommendations and claims of cures can be. This book explains what the Young Autism UCLA study was, what methods they used, and what Applied Behavioral Analysis is. It discusses the critism of ABA and has a nice comparison of the research on alterative treatments treatments.

This is a good starter book for someone trying to figure out what ABA is and if this is for their child. My only critism is they over fixate on the scientific method. The truth is after all these years we still know very little about ASD and less about why some children improve with certain treatments and other children experience less improvement.
